About The Artist –

Pesach Irsai (1896, Hungary – 1968, Israel), was a graphic designer, typographer, artist, and researcher of the Hebrew alphabet. He studied architecture in Budapest and after his studies worked as a graphic designer. In 1925 he immigrated to Israel, later he returned to Hungary where he worked as a modernist designer, and in 1945 he immigrated to Israel again and settled there. Considered one of the leaders of modern style in the history of Israeli graphic and typographic design, he designed posters, book covers, logos, and more. Among his important works as a typographer and graphic designer: the Haim font, considered the first modern Hebrew font (1929), the recruitment poster (1948), and the Malwa Tel Aviv Jaffa poster (1952). As an artist, Pesach Irsai created within the framework of modernism and painted, among other things, in the style of cubism. As part of his work as a researcher, he published articles on typography and design.

On the eastern side of Shtrauss Street in Jerusalem, is the building that gave the street its name, the Shtrauss Health Center.

The building, designed by the architect Benjamin Chaikin, was inaugurated in 1929 by the Hadassah Zionist Organization at the initiative of Henrietta Sold and with the contribution of Natan Strauss in order to serve as a building for clinics, dental clinics, a center for medical consultation and training, hygiene and nutrition.

Its full name, engraved above its entrance, is “The Natan and Lina Strauss Health Center for Children of All Races and Religions.” Before the establishment of the health center, a large steam-powered flour mill was located on this lot, established by Shlomo HaCohen Milner. The mill caught fire shortly before the health center was built on the site.

Today (2012) the building belongs to Hadassah Hospital and is used for outpatient clinics and offices.

The torch race expressed the values ​​advocated by the ‘Young Maccabi’ movement: love of country, existence of the people in their country, freedom, independence, and devotion to the cause. The holding of the race despite the danger emphasized its symbolism, and the members of the ‘Young Maccabi’ insisted on holding it despite everything. This is how the newspaper ‘Davar’ described the course of the race, held on Friday (19.12.44): “At sunrise, they reached the Hasmonean tombs. After a short ceremony, a torch was lit that was carried by messengers to Tel Aviv… The desolate places were accepted by the “Maccabi” members who are busy teaching physical culture in the army divisions: Feizner, Al. Aterman, Miron Abramson, A. Kuritsky; And in the towns of the south, the members of the associations ran from Rehovot, Rishon, and Nes-Ziona… In S.A. over a hundred runners participated in the race. At four o’clock in the afternoon, the journey reached Tel Aviv and many gathered to see the spectacle. The runners, with the torch in their hands, passed through the main streets until they reached the Maccabi House on Maccabim Street.”

Gadna (Hebrew: גדנ״ע) is an Israeli military program that prepares young people for military service in the Israel Defense Forces. It was established before the foundation of the State of Israel and was anchored in law in 1949.
