Who is Anti-Semitic? An Extremely Rare Soviet Anti-Antisemitism Poster from 1928 Present the Jewish Museum in NYC

 

“These are the people who, out of spite, turn the dark ones against the Jew.” Designed by Nikolai Denisovsky, Published 1927-1930.

 

An exceptional and relevant poster that speaks loudly of the dark persistence of antisemitism and hatred despite its many changing faces. This poster comes to remind us that anti-Semitism, regardless of its outward transformation, remains a deeply ingrained malice in society.

 

Soviet Anti-Antisemitism Campaign

 

In the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, Lenin condemned antisemitism, outlawing it officially in 1918. A Soviet campaign followed to root out antisemitic ideologies, framing them as remnants of an outdated, oppressive past. Despite this, anti-Jewish sentiment lingered in Soviet society, both within the government and among the educated elite.

This poster captures that paradox, depicting six figures split in half—contrasting their appearance before and after the revolution. While outwardly altered by time, their inner bigotry remains intact. The contrasting red and black backgrounds and captions reinforce the stubborn continuity of hatred despite societal change.

This powerful piece serves as a solemn reminder for us today. How many times have we seen the mask of anti-Semitism change, only to reveal the same face beneath? The message remains timeless: it is not the appearance of our adversaries that matters, but their unchanging animosity.

"The Dreyfus Affair and the Truth" – Pro-Dreyfus Board Game – France, Late 19th Century Jeu d'laffaire dreyfus et de la verité [The Game of the Dreyfus Affair and the Truth]. [Sceaux]: E. Charaire, [1898?]. A pro-Dreyfus board game that was enclosed with an issue of the L'Aurore newspaper, the liberal newspaper that published Émile Zola's famous open letter "J'Accuse". The 63 spaces depict various events and personalities related to the Dreyfus Affair, including Ferdinand Esterhazy, Émile Zola, the editor of L'Aurore and many others. The objective of the game is to get to the truth, which is represented as a young woman rising out of a well, a figure depicted also in several of the game's stations. This image was popular in turn-of-the-century France and is based on an aphorism by Greek philosopher Democritus, "Of truth we know nothing, for truth is in a well". Approx. 45.5X62.5 cm.
