THE JEWISH BRIGADE GROUP
Beginning in 1920, Great Britain ruled Palestine under a mandate created by the League of Nations. The British were to facilitate the establishment of a modern Jewish homeland. Due to Arab opposition to the proposed Jewish homeland in Palestine, the British initially refused to establish a separate fighting unit of Jewish volunteers from Palestine. However, wartime manpower requirements and the strategic need to defend the Middle East induced the British to permit the formation of 15 Palestinian Jewish battalions. These units were incorporated into the British army in September 1940.

Jewish units fought with the Allies in Greece in 1941; 100 Palestinian Jews were killed there and 1,700 captured by the Germans. On August 6, 1942, the British army formed a Palestine Regiment out of three Jewish and one Palestinian Arab battalion. The regiment fought in Egypt and in the battles of North Africa.

The Jewish Brigade Group of the British army, which fought under the Zionist flag, was formally established in September 1944. It included more than 5,000 Jewish volunteers from Palestine organized into three infantry battalions and several supporting units. Under the command of Brigadier Ernest Benjamin, the Jewish Brigade fought against the Germans in Italy from March 1945 until the end of the war in May 1945.

After the German surrender, the Jewish Brigade was stationed along the Italian border with Austria and Yugoslavia, and later in Belgium and the Netherlands. Some soldiers from the Brigade helped create displaced persons camps for Jewish survivors of the Holocaust. Brigade members also became involved in organizing the flight of Jewish refugees from eastern Europe and their clandestine entry into Palestine. Individual soldiers acquired arms for the Hagana, the major Jewish underground defense organization in Palestine.

Britain disbanded the Jewish Brigade Group in the summer of 1946. Some 30,000 Jewish volunteers from Palestine served with the British forces during World War II. More than 700 were killed during active duty

In 1925, Ze’ev Jabotinsky founded the Revisionist Zionist Alliance, a Zionist political movement. Its name was derived from its call for a revision – for a new look at the policy of the Zionist Executive towards the British Government and its mandate over Eretz Yisrael.

The slogan of the Revisionist Movement was used as a title in the “Rassvet” newspaper, edited by Jabotinsky; “The goal of Zionism is: Eretz Yisrael as a single state on both sides of the Jordan River.”

The Tel Hai Fund calls for donations during the independence war.

The fund was founded in London in 1929 after the Arab riots and violence of 1929. During the British Mandate period, the funds were used by the revisionist Zionist movement. Its stated goals were supported for the Jewish defense in the Land of Israel, and the education of the Zionist youth for self-defense.

Special Blessing Poster in Honor of Israel’s First Independence Day Issued by Keren Hayesod,1949 Designed by the Renowned Shamir Brothers
This is the very first poster that was issued to celebrate Israel’s first Independence Day in 1949. The item is very rare and is a real Masterpiece, Issued by the Keren Hayesod and designed by the very known Shamir Brothers.

Gabriel Shamir (1909-1992) and Maxim Shamir (1910-1990) were Israeli graphic designers. They designed Israel’s official state emblems, medals, stamps, and currency notes.

Between 1930 and 1931 Gabriel worked for the Lintas advertising agency in Berlin and between 1931-1933 for Gumaelius in Stockholm. In 1934, they opened a graphic design studio in Riga, Latvia, but the following year they immigrated to Palestine. The brothers arrived during the Fifth Aliyah. They established the Shamir Brothers Studio on Rothschild Boulevard in Tel Aviv and began to design posters. In 1935, the Shamirs co-founded the Society of Hebrew Graphic Artists in Eretz Israel.

The Coat of Arms of Israel was designed by the Shamir Brothers
Because there were few Hebrew typefaces at the time, the Shamirs improvised hand-painted Hebrew letters, often into transliterated words from European languages and English. Whereas Franz Kraus, the Austrian graphic designer who arrived in Eretz Israel a year before the Shamirs, adhered to a uniform type style, the brothers sought typography that they felt expressed the subject matter.

The Shamir brothers, enthusiastic about the establishment of the Jewish state, undertook to formalize and actualize the visual symbols of Israeli sovereignty and independence. They designed the state’s emblems, medals, stamps, and currency notes, including the 1949 Israeli State Coat of Arms (an image of a menorah and olive branches). In addition, they advertised cigarettes and other consumer goods, as well as designed stamps for countries in Africa, Asia, and South America. Their posters, other advertisements, and logos from 1935 to the close of their studio in 1974—rendered for the lottery, marketing fairs, land settlement, support of the army, food rationing, anti-black-market drives, and other nationalistic efforts—express a hyped Communist attitude, but not extreme or dour as in the propaganda of Bolshevik Russia

“Soldier! Take care of me, trust me” Rare Vintage IDF poster for Weapon Care, Shamir Brothers, 1950s

After the UN decision to partition Israel, acquiring weapons for Israeli Defense became a critical yet extremely complex challenge. With an arms embargo imposed by the US on the Middle East blocking legal supplies from America and Europe, Israel resorted to illicit arms procurement, mainly from the Soviet bloc. This led to a varied and outdated arsenal, causing severe logistical issues for the IDF. (It should also be noted that meanwhile, Arab armies were extremely equipped, both in the quantity and quality of weaponry).

Following the War of Independence, the IDF sought a solution by standardizing its firearms. In the 1950s, they selected the FN FAL rifle—a modern and efficient weapon successfully used by Israel until the 70s in numerous operations, including Operation Kadesh (1956), the Six-Day War (1967), and the Yom Kippur War (1973). Despite its accuracy, the rifle’s sensitivity to desert conditions required constant maintenance, leading to frustration among soldiers.

To address this and foster trust and proper care for their weapons, the Ministry of Defense launched a campaign for the soldiers. As part of this effort, the renowned Shamir brothers created the poster you see above, now newly discovered and presented here—the only known survivor from that campaign. The poster’s slogan, “Soldier! Take care of me, trust me,” encapsulates the intricate narrative of Israel’s early military history, reflecting the battles fought to build and defend the nascent state.
