EL AL was born in 1948 along with the State of Israel, not only as an airborne bridge between the fledgling State and the world but as an expression of national existence and pride, as the Israeli flag adorning the aircraft’s tail proudly appeared in destinations around the world.

The history of EL AL is entwined with the history of Israel. EL AL grew along with the State, sharing moments of glory and joy – promoting the country’s growth and expanding its global reach. EL AL and its people were also there during days of sorrow and pain, answering the call of the nation.​

The Mizrachi movement emerged as the earliest expression of religious Zionism, blending Zionist ideals with Jewish theology. Originated at the 1902 Zionist Congress in Vilna, under the leadership of Rabbi Yitzchak Jacob Reines, Mizrachi garnered support from prominent figures like the Zionist Organization President Benjamin Ze’ev Herzl, the father of modern political Zionism. Its core belief was that the realization of the Zionist vision was inseparable from the fulfillment of Jewish religious obligations, setting it apart from secular Zionist factions and certain Orthodox groups.

Its name came from the Mizrachi Zionist organization and is a Hebrew acronym for Religious Centre (Hebrew: מרכז רוחני, Merkaz Ruhani).
