‘Les Juifs’ (The Jews), a historically significant French Jewish journal, holds a special place among the Jewish journalistic efforts to counter the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe and France. It emerged in 1933 amid the rise of the Nazi Party to power and found crucial support from Chaim Weizmann.

Initiated by the journalist Aharon Hezroni and a group of Jewish intellectuals, the journal featured works by the greatest Jewish minds of that time, including Einstein, Sholem Asch, Victor Basch, André Spire, Henri Torrès, Baron Melchett, and many others.

The letter is a response to Hezroni’s requests for help in funding the paper. Weizmann acknowledged the journal’s importance: ‘You are quite right with the idea for a good French-Jewish newspaper.’ Although immediate resources were scarce, he stated, ‘I do not have control over funds of this nature, but I will give the plan serious thought.’ Despite challenges, Weizmann committed to exploring avenues and arranged a meeting in Paris to craft a comprehensive plan. Not long after, the journal was established.

This rare letter from Weizmann in 1932 serves as a testament to the unwavering commitment of individuals like him, who recognized the importance of establishing new platforms for Zionist expression dissemination and activism against the anti-Semitic rise in Europe.

Next week, we will celebrate Hanukkah – a holiday that recalls the story of the Jewish people at a time when they fought to preserve their autonomy and identity in the face of an oppressive military force.

Most Jews know only the legend about the miracle of the cruse of oil and very little about the actual military victories of the Maccabees. Judah Maccabee, his father, and his brothers are individuals who continue to provide us with a fighting spirit.

This eight-day holiday commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend, Jews, led by Judah Maccabi established a strong Jewish army that had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt.

The morals of Hanukkah resonate with us to this day: bravery, resilience, rebellion, and independence. 70 years ago, a defense army was established in Israel to protect the people and the State of Israel. To this day it is one of the most powerful armies in the world.

The People’s Census
Rare Posters from the Israel independence war

The People’s Census was a system of general mobilization in the locality near the establishment of the State of Israel.

The Commander of the People, whose official name was “The Commander of the People’s Service,” was a system of general mobilization in the locality between November 29 and the State Declaration (November 1947 to May 1948), which was established by the leadership of the community and the Haganah organization [1]. Recruitment, which included issuing recruitment orders in the Hebrew newspapers, establishing recruitment bureaus, conducting physical fitness tests and recruits were sent to input bases in the bus travel system, which was declared mandatory [2] and was the response to the mass. 1947, led by Levi Eshkol (then Shkolnik) and Benjamin Avniel (later Knesset member of the Herut Movement).

They were called to recruit men and women aged 17 to 25. The recruitment orders published in the press, entitled “Anyone aged 17-25 for the service of the people”, say, among others:

“You are 17 – 25, who has not yet fulfilled your duty – you are given that
It extended to fulfill the nation’s order for the service of the people.
Your friends have already enlisted.
For your sake, leave three chambers open every day …
Anyone who is 17 – 25 who does not show up … is lawfully dodged. ”
Encouragement of youth parades and orchestras was held in the major cities where posters were carried saying:

“The time has come!
Your friends in positions! And you’re home? ”
The Center for the People’s Census also conducted special recruitment campaigns for symbols and officers in the British Army and other armies as well as physicians and physicians.

On February 12, 1948, an age called to stabilize was raised to 35.

The mobilization led to the enlistment of tens of thousands, which, before the establishment of the IDF, were called the “Protective Forces.” The mass volunteerism enabled the defense to stand ready with 6 infantry brigades on the day of the Arab armies’ invasion, May 15, 1948.

The Electoral System in Israel:

Members of the Israeli Knesset are not elected directly, but only as part of rosters of specific lists which participate in the general elections. in order to be represented in the Knesset, a list that takes part in the elections must pass the qualifying electoral threshold, which is currently 3.25%.

Knesset is elected to a four-year term, but it may disperse before the end of this period by passing a Knesset dissolution bill, which also determines the date of the next elections. A Knesset may also disperse prematurely if it has failed to pass the State Budget within three months of the beginning of the fiscal year, or if the prime minister, with the approval of the president, issues an order dissolving the Knesset if s/he is convinced that the Knesset is oppositional, meaning that a majority of its members are opposed to the government and that the government cannot function properly as a consequence of that.
