Ben-Gurion’s Top Secret Signed Letter 1951: Israeli-Syrian Border Conflict Written After the Independence War. The Clam of Israel’s Sovereignty over Demilitarized Syrian Border

In 1951, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion wrote a classified letter that played a crucial role in establishing Israeli control and ownership over the demilitarized area on the Syrian border. This letter was a significant milestone in Israel’s historical claim to the region.

Background:

After the 1948 war, territories that were meant for the “Jewish state” according to the UN partition plan were held by the Syrian army. However, in 1949, the armistice agreements required the Syrian army to withdraw from these areas, designating them as “demilitarized zones.” Despite this, Israel maintained its claim of sovereignty over these regions, as outlined in the partition plan.

Tensions Escalate:

In 1951, tensions escalated when Syrian forces attacked Israeli workers during the Lake HaHula drying project. This incident brought the disputes over the demilitarized areas to the forefront.

Ben-Gurion Takes a Stand:

In response to the escalating dispute and General Riley’s statement denying sovereign rights to either side, Prime Minister Ben-Gurion wrote a letter on March 13, 1951. This letter was addressed to ministers, government members, and high IDF officials, and it made it clear that Israel intended to apply its laws to the demilitarized areas. It also delineated the responsible authority for the region. As a result, on March 30, the Israeli government took action and decided to realize its sovereignty over these regions.

This classified letter remains a pivotal moment in Israel’s history, shaping the nation’s territorial policy and strengthening its claim over the demilitarized Syrian border.

Political and significant election poster of the Harut movement “If You Want To Eliminate The Key Regime Give Your Voice To Herut””, 1951 elections.
A colorful poster in lithographic print, a rare poster that shows the essence of the rivalry between the two competing ideologies in Israel.
The poster is designed in the style of socialist realism (absurdly)
This very rare vintage poster was issued by the Herut movement as part of the election campaign in Israel in 1951. Herut was the major right-wing nationalist political party in Israel from 1948 until its formal merger into Likud in 1988. It was an adherent of Revisionist Zionism and was initially known in part for its militia actions; it became more moderate in the 1950s.

EL AL was born in 1948 along with the State of Israel, not only as an airborne bridge between the fledgling State and the world but as an expression of national existence and pride, as the Israeli flag adorning the aircraft’s tail proudly appeared in destinations around the world.

The poster, designed by Franz Krausz in 1951, depicts EL AL’s first commercial flights to four continents: New York in the United States, Nairobi and Johannesburg in Africa, various cities in Europe, and Israel in Asia.

Between 1951 and 1957, EL AL experienced what came to be known as the ‘lean years.’ The initial excitement and improvisation of the airline’s first two years had settled, and the airline was striving to establish itself as a stable commercial operation while continuing its mission to connect Israel to the world.

During this period, Israel faced the monumental task of providing for hundreds of thousands of new immigrants. The economy was struggling, and there were significant challenges in travel and trade due to austerity measures. There were serious doubts about whether a small nation like Israel could sustain an airline capable of competing internationally without draining national resources.

Initially, EL AL’s routes connected Tel Aviv only with major European cities such as Paris, London, Rome, and Zurich. In June 1950, after acquiring two additional DC-4 aircraft from United Airlines, EL AL began special charter flights between Tel Aviv and New York (Idlewild Airport, now JFK). In October 1950, it expanded its service to Johannesburg, South Africa, via Khartoum, Nairobi, and Livingstone.

This expansion made EL AL the first airline outside North America and Europe to operate scheduled trans-North Atlantic service, a revolutionary achievement celebrated throughout Israel.

The Designer: Franz Krausz-

Considered one of the most influential figures in Israeli design, Franz Krauss redefined the aesthetic symbols of the nation’s visual identity.
With a career spanning over four decades, Krauss was a master of his craft. The colors are bright and vibrant, the composition is dynamic and striking the illustrations are impressive and, most importantly, encapsulate the true spirit of Israel during his time.

What set Krauss apart was his profound understanding of the unique ambiance prevailing in Israel during those years—a sense of unity, innovation, and a drive to create a brighter future. He possessed the uncanny ability to convey these sentiments through his iconic posters, which now serve as poignant relics of that era.

Very rare poster of EL AL Israel Airline printed 1951

El Al Israel Airlines

El Al Israel Airlines is not just a national airline; it’s a symbol of the birth and growth of the State of Israel. The airline’s story began in 1948, when the Israeli government needed to bring home President Chaim Weizmann and his wife Vera from Switzerland in a stately manner. They chose a C-54 plane from the Israeli Air Force, which they named “El Al” inspired by the biblical phrase meaning “to the skies.” And thus, the national airline of Israel was born.

The poster you are looking at was created in 1951 when El Al had just begun its journey toward becoming one of the most advanced and efficient airlines in the world. The poster represents the spirit of El Al and the Israeli people’s determination to soar to new heights despite the challenges they faced.

This poster is not just a beautiful piece of art; it’s a part of history. It represents El Al’s early days when the airline was still finding its wings. It was a time when El Al pilots and cabin crew participated in the airlift of almost 47,000 Yemenite Jews and 3,000 Habbanim Jews from the Arabian Peninsula to Israel. It was a time when El Al became the first visible symbol of a new life of freedom for 113,000 Iraqi immigrants.

The poster is a testament to the airline’s resilience, which was put to the test during the 1956 War. Every foreign airline immediately canceled all flights to and from Israel, but El Al flew passengers in and out of the country, proving that only El Al can be relied upon at any time to continue air service.

The poster captures the essence of El Al’s journey from its humble beginnings to becoming a major international carrier. It represents the airline’s commitment to excellence and innovation, which led them to purchase new aircraft such as the Lockheed Constellation and the Boeing 707. El Al broke several world records during this period, including the fastest flight, the first nonstop service on the New York/Tel Aviv route, and the world’s longest nonstop commercial flight.

Owning this poster is not just a way to decorate your home or office; it’s a way to own a piece of history. It’s a reminder of El Al’s journey and the Israeli people’s determination to soar to new heights against all odds

EL AL was born in 1948 along with the State of Israel, not only as an airborne bridge between the fledgling State and the world, but as an expression of national existence and pride, as the Israeli flag adorning the aircraft’s tail proudly appeared in destinations around the world.

The history of EL AL is entwined with the history of Israel. EL AL grew along with the State, sharing moments of glory and joy – promoting the country’s growth and expanding its global reach. EL AL and its people were also there during days of sorrow and pain, answering the call of the nation.

EL AL continues to grow in step with the country. Although the airline was privatized economically several years ago, its national spirit and commitment to Israel have never wavered. EL AL continues its many national activities striving for excellence through the service it offers its passengers. EL AL will continue to grow and flourish with the State and to be the first choice of travelers to and from Israel.

The guidelines by which the company operates are productivity, efficiency, punctuality and professionalism, in order to meet its passengers requirements at all times and places.

Through broad global coverage supported by an international chain of 77 sales offices and warm Israeli hospitality, EL AL has become more than a means of transport from one place to another in the world. It has been ranked by IATA as one of the most efficient airlines in the world.
