Israel, Holiday All Year Around. Vintage Tourism Poster 1954 Jean David
Beautiful poster designed by Jean David calling upon people from around the world to come and visit the young state of Israel. This poster was made by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Tourism. In the early 1950s, Israel launched a major campaign around the world to attract Jews to vacation in Israel and also to persuade them to immigrate to Israel after the vacation.
This poster was printed in honor of this campaign and printed in several languages
This particular poster was hung by a travel agency in the United States.
As you can see the man dressed like a Jewish American with a Hawaiian shirt.
Jan David was the official designer of El Al and the Israeli Ministry of Tourism.

Extremely Rare “Milve” (lottery) Vintage Israeli Poster 1954

From the time of the establishment of the state until the 1980s, the government raised money through a “milve” (lottery), which was usually mandatory. The citizens lent money to the state, which was returned to them with interest – usually to finance immigration and wars.

The governments of Israel discovered the patent very close to the establishment of the state. Instead of raising taxes, whenever a serious crisis broke out or there was an urgent need for the state, in its first decades, to put liquid money into the coffers, which could be used immediately – the state captains initiated a special lender. The system worked like this: Israeli citizens would lend money to the state, and a few years later they would receive it back, sometimes even with a fairly handsome interest rate and linked to the index. The first attendants were also attached, as is typical of the people of Israel – prizes. Every time the borrowers were redeemed, a few years after the state received the loans from its citizens, there were citizens who won the lottery and received much more money than they lent it.

Jean David was a painter and designer, known for his contributions to the Romanian avant-garde and to the early modernist art of Israel (then recently founded).

He has studied between 1927 and 1937 at various art academies in Paris. In 1929 he participated for the first time at a collective exhibition in Bucharest and in 1933 he had his first personal exhibition (in the same city). In the early ’30s he was a member of the Surrealist group “unu” (meaning “one”). In 1942, he has left Romania in a boat with 12 other Jews, including Theodor Brauner, the brother of Victor Brauner. After being captured by British authorities in Cyprus, he managed to reach Palestrina in 1944. Together with Marcel Janco, he founded in Israel the artist village known as Ein Hod. He also gained much reputation as a muralist and especially designer, having designed numerous posters and other works for the El Al air company.

Official poster published for the sixth Independence Day of the State of Israel. Litho-offset “Kaufman and Co.”, the Governmental Printer, Jerusalem, 1954. Design: Gerd Rothschild and Zev Lipman (signed in the plate: “Roli”).
An illustration of the remnants of an ancient stone structure with various Jewish symbols (seven-branched Menorah, a Shofar, a Lulav), to which six new bricks were added. Among the bricks, a young olive branch is growing, with six leaves.

On the Waterfront is a 1954 American crime drama film, directed by Elia Kazan and written by Budd Schulberg. It stars Marlon Brando and features Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb, Rod Steiger, Pat Henning, and Eva Marie Saint in her film debut. The musical score was composed by Leonard Bernstein. The film was suggested by “Crime on the Waterfront” by Malcolm Johnson, a series of articles published in November–December 1948 in the New York Sun which won the 1949 Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting, but the screenplay by Budd Schulberg is directly based on his own original story.[1] The film focuses on union violence and corruption amongst longshoremen, while detailing widespread corruption, extortion, and racketeering on the waterfronts of Hoboken, New Jersey.

On the Waterfront was a critical and commercial success. It received twelve Academy Award nominations and won eight, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Brando, Best Supporting Actress for Saint, and Best Director for Kazan. In 1997, it was ranked by the American Film Institute as the eighth-greatest American movie of all time; in AFI’s 2007 list, it was ranked 19th. It is Bernstein’s only original film score not adapted from a stage production with songs.

In 1989, On the Waterfront was one of the first 25 films to be deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress[2] and selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.[3][4]
