Exodus Movie Poster (1960) Directed by Otto Preminger, Actor Paul Newman, Eva Marie Saint, Peter Lawford, Ralph Richardson, Sal Mineo, Lee J. Cobb, John Derek, dir. Otto Preminger Studio: United Artists. Exodus 1947 was a ship carrying Jewish emigrants, that left France on July 11, 1947 with the intent of taking its passengers to Palestine, then controlled by the British. Most of the emigrants were Holocaust survivor refugees, who had no legal immigration certificates to Palestine. Following wide media coverage, the British Royal Navy seized the ship, and deported all its passengers back to Europe.

Invasion The German army invaded France on 10 May 1940. On 22 June 1940, the French surrendered and signed an armistice with the Nazis. France was then divided in two zones. Northern France was occupied and controlled by Germany. The unoccupied southern zone came under the control of a new French Government led by Marshal Philippe Petain, a World War I hero. Established in the spa town of Vichy, the government and area became known as the Vichy France. General Charles de Gaulle, who opposed Petain’s surrender to the Germans, fled to Great Britain and set up a French Government-in-exile. Many other Frenchmen who wanted to free France from the Germans also supported de Gaulle and fought with the British. Anti-Jewish laws In the summer of 1940, 350,000 Jews were living in France. More than half the Jewish population were not French citizens. Many were Jews who had emmigrated to France from easten Europe after World War I. In addition, many more were Jewish refugees fleeing antisemitism within Nazi Germany and other areas occupied by the Nazis. Almost immediately after the German invasion, Jews living in the occupied zone, and in Vichy France, were subjected to various anti-Jewish measures. In the controlled zone, Jews were dismissed from their jobs and their freedom of movement was restricted. Many Jews were arrested. Collaboration The Vichy Government began to persecute Jews. In October 1940, they passed a set of anti-Jewish laws, defining who was a Jew and limiting their involvement in French society. In March 1941 the Vichy authorities, under pressure from the Germans, set up an Office for Jewish Affairs. Jewish property and businesses were confiscated under Aryanisation laws. Initially, the Vichy Government’s anti-Jewish measures were directed against Jews who were of non-French citizensip. Many thousands were sent to forced labour camps or imprisoned. However, at the end of April 1942, Pierre Laval joined the Vichy Government as prime minister. Laval said Vichy should collaborate fully with the Nazis. From then on the Vichy regime began to persecute all Jews, irrespective of their citizenship. Deportations In June 1942, the Germans forced the Jews in the occupied zone to wear the Star of David. Throughout the summer of 1942, they arrested Jews for deportation, and restricted the movements of the remaining community. These ‘roundups’ were usually carried by French police who collaborated with the Nazis. In one aktion which took place in Paris on 16-17 July 1942, 12,000 were rounded up. Around 7,000 of them were crammed into the Velodrome d’Hiver sports stadium for several days; with no food, water, or sanitation. Many thousands more Jews were sent by cattle car to Drancy transit camp in a suburb of Paris. From there they were deported to the east. The Vichy authorities also arrested and deported Jews from their zone. During the war approximately 80,000 Jews were deported from France. Of these, 70,000 were sent to Auschwitz. The remainder were sent to Majdanek, Sobibor and Buchenwald. By the end of the war just 2,000 of those who were deported had survived.

The Hapoel convention was a national and international sports event that was held once every four years under the auspices of the President of the State of Israel. The public council of the convention was headed by the general secretary of the General Workers’ Union. The first convention was held in 1928, and the 15th and last convention was held in 1995.

In the beginning, there was a national gathering of all members of Hapoel, athletes in a variety of fields, who held meetings and competitions that lasted several days. As the number of “Hapoel” members increased, so did the nature of the event. At the center of the convention – international and national events.

Annual Torch Race Vintage Isareli Poster 1949 Designed by M.Tolchinsky

The youth movement ‘The Young Maccabi’ decided in 1944 to establish a new custom: a Hanukkah torch race in memory of the Maccabees, which started from the Maccabee cemeteries and from there reached the rest of the country. The idea to hold the race was influenced by the first torch race, held at the Berlin Olympics in 1936, but also by a description in the Mishnah about how messages were passed from settlement to settlement by lighting torches in ancient times in the Land of Israel.

The torch race expressed the values advocated by the ‘Young Maccabi’ movement: love of country, existence of the people in their country, freedom, independence, and devotion to the cause. At that time it was a complex operation because the place where the torch was lit and the start of the race route were located near Arab settlements. The holding of the race despite the danger emphasized its symbolism, and the members of the ‘Young Maccabi’ insisted on holding it despite everything. This is how the newspaper ‘Davar’ described the course of the race, held on Friday (19.12.44): “At sunrise, they reached the Hasmonean tombs. After a short ceremony, a torch was lit that was carried by messengers to Tel Aviv… The desolate places were accepted by the “Maccabi” members who are busy teaching physical culture in the army divisions: Feizner, Al. Aterman, Miron Abramson, A. Kuritsky; And in the towns of the south, the members of the associations ran from Rehovot, Rishon, and Nes-Ziona… In S.A. over a hundred runners participated in the race. At four o’clock in the afternoon, the journey reached Tel Aviv and many gathered to see the spectacle. The runners, with the torch in their hands, passed through the main streets until they reached the Maccabi House on Maccabim Street.”

Gadna (Hebrew: גדנ״ע) is an Israeli military program that prepares young people for military service in the Israel Defense Forces. It was established before the foundation of the State of Israel and was anchored in law in 1949. Today it is a one-week program of discipline and military training usually under commanders serving with the Nahal infantry brigade. Gadna hosts an estimated 19,000 Israeli youth annually, as well as numerous foreign youths.

Fiddler on the Roof is a 1971 American epic historical musical film produced and directed by Norman Jewison, and written by Joseph Stein and Sholem Aleichem. An adaptation of the 1964 Broadway musical of the same name, it stars Topol, Norma Crane, Leonard Frey, Molly Picon, and Paul Mann. The film centers on Tevye, a poor Jewish milkman living in Anatevka, who is faced with the challenge of marrying off his five daughters amidst the growing tension in his village.

Fiddler on the Roof was theatrically released on November 3, 1971, by United Artists to critical and commercial success. Reviewers praised Jewison’s direction, the screenplay, and the performances of the cast, while the film grossed $83.3 million worldwide on a $9 million budget, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1971. The film received a leading eight nominations at the 44th Academy Awards, including for the Best Picture, and won three; Best Score Adaptation, Best Cinematography, Best Sound.[3]

A beautiful educational colorful poster published by the JNF (Keren Kayemet LeIsrael) that was hung in kinder gardens and schools during the 1950s and 1960s in order to endow the basics of Jewish holidays.

The Jewish National Fund was founded in 1901 to buy and develop land in Ottoman Palestine for Jewish settlement. By 2007, it owned 13% of the total land in Israel. Since its inception, the JNF says it has planted over 240 million trees in Israel. It has also built 180 dams and reservoirs, developed 250,000 acres of land, and established more than 1,000 parks.
