Poster with a beautiful design by designer Franz Kraus for a children’s album for DOBEK Co
The soldier in the poster is in the spirit of the time

ONE OF THE RAREST POSTER THAT PRINTED IN THE LATE 1930S IN ERETZ ISRAEL BY THE DOBEK COMPANY

DOBEK COMPANY THAT RELEASED AN ALBUM WITH HUNDREDS OF PHOTOS OF THE DEFENDERS OF THE HOMELAND. HUNDREDS OF PHOTOS OF ATHLETES FROM ERETZ ISRAEL. THIS IS THE STORY OF A RARE AND UNUSUAL ALBUM
BUT IT WAS NOT THE JEWISH AGENCY THAT RELEASED THE RARE ALBUM FROM THE LATE 1930S. NEITHER IT WAS KEREN HAYESOD NOR THE KKL-JNF; THE ONE WHO COLLECTED AND COLLECTED THE RARE PHOTOS WAS DOVEK, THE OLD BLUE-AND-WHITE CIGARETTE COMPANY.

IN THE YEARS BEFORE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE STATE, LONG BEFORE THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH DETERMINED THAT SMOKING WAS HARMFUL TO HEALTH AND THAT THIS SHOULD BE NOTED ON EVERY PACK, THE CIGARETTE COMPANY DOVEK RELEASED AN ALBUM TO COLLECT STICKERS CALLED “GUARD AND SPORTS”. THE CAPTIONS OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS INDICATE THAT THE “CAMPAIGN” TOOK PLACE IN THE EARLY 1940S (THE PHOTOGRAPHS DEAL WITH THE PERIOD OF THE EVENTS OF 1936-1939, BUT ON THE AGENDA: WORLD WAR II)
“GUARD AND SPORT, SERIOUSNESS AND PLAY, SEEMINGLY TWO OPPOSING CONCEPTS, ARE NEVERTHELESS CHARACTERISTIC OF THE MOST SUBLIME AND SUBLIME QUALITIES OF MAN AND PEOPLE: HEROISM AND FREEDOM, POWER AND REDEMPTION, COURAGE AND HONOR,” READS THE OPENING OF THE ALBUM.
GUARD AND SPORTS
AN ADVERTISEMENT FOR “DOBEK” THAT WAS PUBLISHED IN THE PRESS WITH THE RELEASE OF THE PHOTO ALBUM, 1939
AND FURTHER:

“THE MISHMAR VESPORT” PHOTO COLLECTION INTENDS TO MAKE A SMALL CONTRIBUTION TO PROMOTING THE IDEA OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN THE COMMUNITY, AND TO ENCOURAGE THE PUBLIC TO CREATE THE NECESSARY MEANS FOR THE YOUTH TO CULTIVATE SPORTS. THE MISHMAR PHOTOS ARE A SMALL ATTEMPT TO SHOW THE COMMUNITY “WITH THEIR GREAT DEDICATION AND COURAGE, THEY PROTECT THE LIVES OF ALL OF US AND THE FREEDOM OF THE PEOPLE.”
PICTURES OF “DEFENDERS OF THE HOMELAND”

FROM THE NEWSPAPERS THAT CAME OUT THAT YEAR, WE LEARN ABOUT THE PROCESS: DOBEK COLLECTED PHOTOS FROM THE ERETZ ISRAEL AUDIENCE, AND IN RETURN GAVE THEM THE ALBUM SHE MADE FROM THE PHOTOS. THESE PHOTOS WERE ATTACHED TO DOVEK’S VARIOUS CIGARETTE BOXES, AND AT THE END OF THE PROCESS, AS MENTIONED, THEY WERE COMPILED INTO A PRESTIGIOUS AND ELEGANT PHOTO ALBUM.
“MICKEY HERSCHEL, WHOSE TRAINED BODY SHOWS A RICH MUSCULAR SYSTEM”,

IT’S A BIT STRANGE THAT A CIGARETTE COMPANY IS THE FIRST TO ENCOURAGE PHYSICAL EDUCATION, OR MAYBE IT’S NOT STRANGE AT ALL, SINCE THE DOBEK COMPANY WAS A SYMBOL OF A THRIVING INDUSTRY IN BLUE AND WHITE, AT A TIME WHEN THE HARMS OF SMOKING WERE ONLY PARTIALLY KNOWN. AMONG OTHER THINGS, THE PEOPLE OF THE SETTLEMENT COULD SMOKE AN “ALIYAH” CIGARETTE AND THUS SYMBOLIZE THE GROUPING OF THE EXILES TO ERETZ ISRAEL, OR A CIGARETTE ON THE MORNING OF THE “ATID” BRAND, WHICH SYMBOLIZES THE VISION OF ZIONISM EMBROIDERING SKIN AND TENDONS IN ERETZ ISRAEL.

“IF THE BOOK BEFORE US HELPS TO AROUSE AND DEEPEN IN THE COMMUNITY ALL ITS AVENUES THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE GREAT VALUE OF SPORTS EDUCATION,” READS THE LAST PAGE OF THE ALBUM, “AND IF IT SUCCEEDS IN PROVING TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC THE DIRECT AND STRONG CONNECTION BETWEEN THE PURPOSE OF HIS AMBITION AND THEREBY CONTRIBUTED HIS PART IN SOLVING THE GREAT AND DIFFICULT ROLES THAT STILL LIE WITH US. ”
PHOTOS OF “ATTACK AND DEFENSE”

ONE CAN ONLY IMAGINE THE YOUNG NOTARY OR THE GIFTED JEWISH ATHLETE, CONCLUDING AN HOUR OF PHYSICAL TRAINING OR GUARDING THE TOWER BY SMOKING A “DOBEK” CIGARETTE – TO THE GLORY OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL.

The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg,” also known as “The Student Prince and Old Heidelberg,” is a 1927 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer silent drama film based on the 1901 play “Old Heidelberg” by Wilhelm Meyer-Förster. It was directed by the German director Ernst Lubitsch, who later became one of Hollywood’s most famous directors.

This magnificent poster design style was very famous in the 1920s. With its remarkable free-hand artistry and elusive typography, this style is certainly missed in today’s graphics.

Rare War Bond Poster of National Loan For Israeli Independence War 1948 “War Loan is Victory Loan”
National Loan
The national loan was a voluntary lender to finance the expenses of the War of Independence, decided by the MINHELT HAAM (Pre-Israeli government), prior to the establishment of the state.

On December 18, 1947, a proposal was made to declare a “national loan” . At the second meeting of the MINHELT HAAM, on April 26, 1948, it was decided to hold a national loan in the amount of 5,000,000 Israeli pounds, in order to finance the campaign that the settlement has been in since November 29.

The public was asked to buy from the banks, starting May 11, 1948, loan certificates in which the buyer lent his money to the Jewish Agency, for a period of 5 years at an interest rate of 3%. The lender guaranteed the Keren Hayesod and the Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael their real estate assets and income.

Lender certificates were a tradable document and the public at all levels was called upon to purchase them. In a proclamation published on May 2, 1948, the People’s Administration called on the public:

“Participation in a lender is not a tax payment, but an investment of funds on a secure banking basis … Every Jew will see the provision of the necessary means for the struggle for our existence and our future as an absolute necessity. Every Jew will participate in the national lender to the fullest ability.”

The money of the national lender was used by the locality and the state in its early days to finance the heavy expenses of conducting the War of Independence. Following the declaration of the state, the national lender was followed by a number of lenders on behalf of the Israeli government.

Purchasers of loan certificates were promised a linkage of the exchange rate, three US dollars per pound.

The Jewish Brigade – A Fighting Force Of The British Army
The Jewish Brigade was a military formation of the British Army. It was established in the fall of 1944 and was composed of some 5,000 Jewish volunteers living in what was then British-mandated Palestine. The Jews in Palestine had long sought to serve in the allied cause in World War II as a distinct fighting force, but these aspirations were resisted by the British military authorities until nearly the end of the war.

The British Mandate

The brigade operated under the leadership of Ernest Frank Benjamin, a Canadian-born British Jewish officer who had served with distinction in the British Army since 1919. Benjamin oversaw the training of the brigade in Egypt, and his eventual deployment to the Eighth Army in Italy .

In Italy, the group saw action against the Germans in crossing the Senior River in northeast Italy in March and April 1945. Following VE Day, on May 8, 1945, the Jewish Brigade was sent to Tarvisio on the Italian-Austrian-Yugoslav border. There they searched for Holocaust survivors, provided them with assistance, and assisted in their escape from Europe and immigration to Palestine.

So after the war, a group of former Jewish Brigade members – under the guise of British military activity – engaged in the assassination of Nazis and smuggled cweaponry to the Haganah Jewish defense forces in Palestine.

In July 1945 the brigade was sent to the Netherlands and then to Belgium. The Jewish Brigade was eventually disbanded in June 1946. Many of the veterans of the Jewish Brigade went on to serve in senior positions in the Israel Defense Forces following the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.

In December 1945, Benjamin was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He eventually retired from the army in September 1950, having exceeded the age limit, and was granted the honorary rank of brigadier.

“Purim Celebrations in Tel-Aviv,  advertising poster. Lithograph in yellow and orange, .

“Come and register to participate in the Purim procession, an artistic suppression for all who demand it”

This poster from 1933 is taken from a collection of posters about the Purim celebrations that took place in Tel Aviv. This is a good example of using cheerful colors, and combining Jewish elements with elements from the world of carnival.

The poster designer turned the city’s shield and skyline from the city emblem into a Purim mask. (decorated with bells) from the Middle Ages.

WIKI
Adloyada (Hebrew: עדלאידע or עדלידע, lit. “Until one no longer knows”) is a humorous procession held in Israel on the Jewish holiday of Purim (or in Shushan Purim the second day of Purim, commanded to be celebrated in “walled cities”, nowadays only in Jerusalem).

The Adloyada parade is a tradition dating back to the early days of Tel Aviv, in 1912. During the days of the Yishuv, the Adloyada was a mass event; it was resumed after the state of Israel was established.

The name is derived from the rabbinic saying in the Talmud that one should revel on Purim by drinking “until one no longer knows” (ad de-lo yada, Aramaic: עַד דְּלָא יָדַע) the difference between “blessed be Mordecai” and “cursed be Haman”.
