During Mapai’s time in office, a wide range of progressive reforms were carried out,as characterized by the establishment of a welfare state, providing minimum income, security, and free (or almost free) access to housing subsidies and health and social services.

Beit Ha’am in Tel Aviv was an educational-cultural institution founded by a volunteer association and intended for the welfare of the residents of Tel Aviv, which opened on July 7, 1925 in a lot in the Ben Yehuda and Shalom Aleichem streets fund, where Beit “El-Al” stands today. In the 1920s and early 1930s, it was a cultural center in which thousands of Tel Aviv residents participated in its activities.

The goal of its founders was, as stated in the proclamation distributed by the “Committee for the Establishment of the People’s House”, to allow the residents of Tel Aviv, especially the poor and the youth among them, to expand their education, “to hear educational lectures and enjoy concerts at affordable prices.” According to their vision, Beit Ha’am will be “a center for public education, a meeting place for all of us, a place for spreading the Hebrew language and culture.”

The activity at Beit Ha’am included a series of lectures, discussions of new literary works and Dumas matters, theater performances, and concerts. The lecturers were some of the best experts in their fields, such as Prof. Yosef Kluizner who also lectured at the Hebrew University which was opened at the same time, Ze’ev Vilnai who lectured on the Land of Israel, Dr. Yehezkel Koifman who discussed issues in the Bible, the poets Leah Goldberg and Elisheva who lectured on literary topics and Dr. Yaakov Belovstein (Brother of Rachel the poet), one of the founders of Beit Ha’am who also lectured on the humanities.

The People’s Commander, whose official name was “The Commander for the Service of the People”, was a system for general recruitment in the Yishuv in the period between November 29 and the declaration of statehood (November 1947 to May 1948), which was established by the leadership of the Yishuv and the “Hagana” organization. The system was called recruitment which included the publication of recruitment orders in the Hebrew newspapers, the establishment of recruitment bureaus, the conduct of physical fitness tests, and the recruits were sent to input bases in the bus system. The recruitment was declared mandatory and the response to it was massive. The system was headed by the “Center for the People’s Command”, which was established on November 19 1947 led by Levi Eshkol (then Shkolnik) and Binyamin Avniel (later member of the Knesset on behalf of the Harut movement).

Men and women between the ages of 17 and 25 were called up for conscription. In the conscription orders published in the press, under the heading “everyone aged 17-25 for the service of the people”

The recruitment resulted in the enlistment of tens of thousands, who before the establishment of the IDF were called “Defense Forces”. The mass volunteering allowed the defense to stand ready with 6 infantry brigades on the day of the invasion of the Arab armies, May 15, 1948.

Ohel (Hebrew for “tent”), originally known as the Workers’ Theatre of Palestine, was established in 1925 as a socialist theatre: members of the company combined acting with farming and industrial labor. The theatre was founded by Moshe Halevy, who was not only an acting teacher but also an educator and spiritual leader and had been a founding member of Habimah in Moscow.

The theatre’s first production was a Hebrew adaptation of stories by the Yiddish writer I. L. Peretz. Peretz’s Parties depicted the decadence of life in the Diaspora, compared to new Jewish life in the Land of Israel. In 1927, it staged Dayagim (“Fishermen”), a socialist play about the exploitation of fishermen by entrepreneurs.

Set designers who worked with the company in its early years were European-trained painters and architects, among them architect Aryeh Elhanani, expressionist painter Israel Paldi and Menachem Shemi, a painter of the Paris school, as well as other important artists such as Reuven Rubin and Arie Aroch.

On a successful European tour in 1934, Ohel staged biblical and national plays. When the company returned to Palestine, it produced The Good Soldier Schweik (1935), one of its most successful offerings. In 1961, Ohel staged a comedy by Ephraim Kishon, Ha-Ketubbah (“The Marriage Contract”), which played for three seasons.

Until 1958, Ohel was the official theatre of the Histadrut, the General Labor Federation.

In 1964, under a new artistic director, Canadian-born Peter Frye, the company performed Ammekha by Scholem Aleichem, plays by Ionesco, Brecht, and young British playwrights. The theatre closed in 1969.

The Morning (Habokar)  was a daily newspaper published between 1935-1965 and represented the broad view of the general Zionists.

“The Morning” newspaper was founded on the initiative of the “Civil Circles” activists in the settlement – urbanites, bourgeois, and peasants who mostly belonged to the middle class, headed by Israel Rokah and Meir Dizengoff. As a counterweight to the leading daily newspaper in the settlement, “Davar” of the General Histadrut of the Workers in the Land of Israel, and the “Haaretz” newspaper, which was also identified with the “Civil Circles”, but was considered moderate and liberal, while “Habokar” sought to promote a center-right view. For the establishment of the newspaper, donations were collected from a number of capitalists, including Sheftel Mirenburg from the owner of Agrobank, the industrialist Yitzhak Lichtenstein, the contractor David Ilgovski and others

In those years there were no means of heating on electricity. Every house had a Fireside stove made by the “Friedman” brothers’ factory in Jerusalem, which is manufactured according to a license granted by the British FireSide factory.
The stove ran on oil that would be bought from an oil seller who would come to the neighborhoods on a cart. The whole method of lighting this stove required a unique skill. Usually, they would turn on the stove in the stairwell, because in the first few minutes of its operation, it would give off horrible smells.

Rare Israeli Vintage Poster “Worker and Immigrant Your Place With Us” 30 anniversary to the Hebrew Worker Party.

HaHistadrut HaKlalit shel HaOvdim B’Eretz Yisrael (Hebrew: ההסתדרות הכללית של העובדים בארץ ישראל‎‎, lit. “General Organisation of Workers in the Land of Israel”), known as the Histadrut, is Israel’s organization of trade unions. Established in December 1920 during the British Mandate for Palestine, it became one of the most powerful institutions of Israel. Histadrut enterprises include: Koor Industries Ltd.,[1] Solel Boneh, and Kupat Holim Clalit. The Histadrut was founded in December 1920 in Haifa to look out for the interests of Jewish workers. Until 1920, Ahdut HaAvoda and Hapoel Hatzair had been unable to set up a unified workers’ organization.[3] In 1920, Third Aliyah immigrants founded Gdud HaAvoda and demanded a unified organization for all Jewish workers, which led to the establishment of the Histadrut.[4] At the end of 1921, David Ben-Gurion was elected as Secretary.[5] Membership grew from 4,400 in 1920 and to 8,394 members in 1922. By 1927, the Histadrut had 25,000 members, accounting for 75% of the Jewish workforce in Mandatory Palestine. The Histadrut became one of the most powerful institutions in the state of Israel, a mainstay of the Labour Zionist movement and, aside from being a trade union, its state-building role made it the owner of a number of businesses and factories and, for a time, the largest employer in the country. Until Israel began moving away from a socialist economy, the Histadrut, along with the government, owned most of the economy. In particular, the Israeli services sector was completely dominated by the Histadrut and government, and the Histadrut also largely dominated public transport, agriculture, and insurance industries. The Histadrut and government also owned a significant portion of Israel’s industrial sector. Membership in 1983 was 1,600,000 (including dependents), accounting for more than one-third of the total population of Israel and about 85% of all wage earners. About 170,000 Histadrut members were Arabs (who were admitted to membership starting in 1959). In 1989, the Histadrut was the employer of approximately 280,000 workers. With the increasing liberalization and deregulation of the Israeli economy since the 1980s, the role and size of Histradrut have declined, though it still remains a powerful force in Israeli society and the nation’s economy. Following its support of the 2011 Israeli social justice protests, on February 8, 2012, Histadrut called a general strike in support of lower paid subcontracted, and unorganized workers, negotiating with both the government and private employers on their behalf, demanding that the subcontracted workers by hired directly and be offered the pay and benefits granted to regular employees. A settlement was announced on Sunday, February 12, which provided for some gains by the subcontractors, but also for a 3-year moratorium on further strikes over subcontractor issues. Social realism.

“The Broom” Theater Vintage Poster Made From Chocolate Wrappers 1932, Purim celebrations invitation.

The Broom was a satirical Hebrew theater that operated during the Yishuv period and in the early days of the state. Over the years of its existence, it has produced over 70 satirical programs.

The Broom was founded in April 1928, as a stage for topical political satire, critically examining what is happening in Israel. The founder and first director of the theater was Yitzhak Moshe Daniel, who had experience in managing theaters in Bucharest and Sofia. The initial nucleus of the actors were friends who retired from the Kettle Theater.

The theater responded to every political event in the country’s life, presenting a series of satirical skits in every show on matters of immigration, Hebrew work, the Hebrew language, and the products of the country. The name of the theater is derived from the Odyssey theater called “The Red Broom”.

The material for the plays of the broom was written by writers and poets in the Land of Israel such as Emanuel the Russian and Abraham Shalonsky (who defined the broom as “the bit of tea left from the kettle”)
