Yom Hamedina Newspaper 1948
The people declare the State of Israel

On November 29, 1947, the United Nations Assembly passed a resolution requiring the establishment of the State of Israel in the Land of Israel. And by virtue of our natural and historical right we declare the establishment of the State of Israel

Extremely rare “Yom Hamedina” (The Day of The State) newspaper. A celebratory newspaper produced in cooperation with all the newspaper systems in Israel and published on behalf of Ben-Gurion order as a one-time event on the declaration day of the state, 5 Iyar, 5708 (Jewish Calendar), May 14, 1948, at four o’clock in the afternoon. The title of the issue indicates the date and time and next to it the statement “Last day for foreign rule”.

The newspaper contains only two pages. The title page opens with the headline “The People Proclaim the State of Israel” and below is a detailed version of the Declaration of Independence. On the second page, announcements and updates about the IDF occupations, the fall of Gush Etzion, threats of invasion, and more.

The ceremony announcing the establishment of the State of Israel took place at Beit Dizengoff at 16 Sderot Rothschild in Tel Aviv. About eight hours before the end of the British mandate and the departure of the last British soldiers from the country. the Chairman of the People’s Administration David Ben-Gurion announced the establishment of the state, and those present at the ceremony signed the Declaration of Independence.

About the designer

Paul Kor was a born artist and author, who became world-renowned for his award-winning paintings, books, illustrations and graphic design work.

He was born to a modest Jewish family in Paris, France in 1926. His passion for the arts was clear from the time he was a small boy. His mother would take him to the Louvre, where he would sit for hours and recreate the works of the greats. After losing his father to the Holocaust at a young age, Kor took refuge in Switzerland, where he was soon recognized for his astounding artistic abilities. His talents secured him a spot at the School of Fine Arts in Geneva, making him one of the few who was able to study during wartime. He eventually returned to Paris to continue his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1947. The following year Kor immigrated to Israel and began developing a visual language that would later mark him the country’s most foremost graphic artist.

During the 1960s, he painted and designed banknotes, postal stamps, and prize-winning posters for state institutions. His work became so widely recognized that he was sought after by dozens of successful, international companies, including El-Al Airlines, the Elite Chocolate Company, and the Coca-Cola Company.

As Kor approached the mid-1970s, he developed an interest in children’s book publishing that sparked his transition into writing and illustrating best-selling children’s books. One of his most well known books, “Caspion the little fish,” won a certificate of merit from the Israel Museum and has since been translated into Arabic, French, German, Korean, and half a dozen other languages.

By the time of his death, Kor’s sensational artwork had earned him countless awards in Israel, Italy, France. and other countries around the world. www.paulkor.com

Collection of 7 original photographs each one size of 25×20 cm – 10″ x 8″  inch
The photographs show all the stages from the conquest of Eilat to the raising   the ink flag

This is an extremely rare photographs, almost none of similar one’s exist. It was taken in 1949 to mark the capture of Eilat by Israel’s military.

The photos is better known as the In flag because of the materials that the stare of david and the stripes were made of. The one who is holding the flag up is Avraham Adan, who would later become Head of Southern Command of Israel.

The known photograph is framed

On 5 March 1949, Israel launched Operation Uvda, the last military maneuver of the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. On 10 March, the Israeli Defense Forces reached the shores of the Red Sea at Umm Rashrash, west of Aqaba in the area of biblical Elath, and captured it without a battle. The Negev Brigade and Golani Brigade took part in the operation. A makeshift flag created from a white sheet inscribed with ink was raised by Captain Avraham Adan, company commander of the 8th Battalion of the Negev Brigade.

The improvised flag was made on the order of Negev Brigade commander Nahum Sarig, when it was discovered that the brigade did not have an Israeli flag on hand. The soldiers found a sheet, drew two ink stripes, and sewed on a Star of David torn off a first-aid kit.

] The photo of the raising of the Ink Flag, taken by the soldier Micha Perry, bears resemblance to the 1945 American photo Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima.
