El Al / London. 1968.
Reisinger designed the logo for El Al and produced numerous screenprinted posters for the Israeli national airline.

EL AL was born in 1948 along with the State of Israel, not only as an airborne bridge between the fledgling State and the world but as an expression of national existence and pride, as the Israeli flag adorning the aircraft’s tail proudly appeared in destinations around the world.

The history of EL AL is entwined with the history of Israel. EL AL grew along with the State, sharing moments of glory and joy – promoting the country’s growth and expanding its global reach. EL AL and its people were also there during days of sorrow and pain, answering the call of the nation.

EL AL continues to grow in step with the country. Although the airline was privatized economically several years ago, its national spirit and commitment to Israel have never wavered. EL AL continues its many national activities striving for excellence through the service it offers its passengers. EL AL will continue to grow and flourish with the State and to be the first choice of travelers to and from Israel.

The guidelines by which the company operates are productivity, efficiency, punctuality and professionalism, to meet its passenger’s requirements at all times and places.

Through broad global coverage supported by an international chain of 77 sales offices and warm Israeli hospitality, EL AL has become more than a means of transport from one place to another in the world. It has been ranked by IATA as one of the most efficient airlines in the world.

Original vintage travel poster advertising holidays in Israel, published in Jerusalem, Israel. Printed by E Lewin-Epstein, Tel Aviv.
Abram Avraham Games OBE, RDI (29 July 1914, Whitechapel, London – 27 August 1996, London) Games was one of the preeminent British graphic designers of the 20th Century. Largely self-taught, Games opened his studio in 1936 and, before the war, was already designing posters for major clients such as Shell, The London Transport, and The National Post Office. In 1942, during the war, he was appointed as Britain’s official war poster designer, in which capacity he created more than 100 posters, and became the key person for British war communication. Games was Jewish and a supporter of the State of Israel for which he designed a few travel posters. This same image was used on a Hebrew language exhibition poster in 1953. Very Rare, we could not locate another at auction in over 20 years.

The style of his work  (refined but vigorous compared to the work of contemporaries ) has earned him a place in the pantheon of the best of 20th-century graphic designers. In acknowledging his power as a propagandist, he claimed, “I wind the spring, and the public, in looking at the poster, will have that spring released in its mind.” Because of the length of his career – over six decades – his work is essentially a record of the era’s social history. Some of Britain’s most iconic images include those by Games. An example is the “Join the ATS” poster of 1941, nicknamed the “blonde bombshell” recruitment poster. His work is recognized for its “striking color, bold graphic ideas, and beautifully integrated typography”

Jaffa Shore Advertisement Poster for the Mediterranean Cruises of Hamburg-America Line 1930s, Designed by Otto Arpke

A beautiful “HAPAG Mittelmeer- und Orientfahrten” poster, advertising the Mediterranean cruises of the German shipping company HAPAG (Hamburg-America Line), illustration of old Jaffa, Tel Aviv on the shores of Palestine 1930s. It depicts the landscape of Jaffa with fishing boats dotting the nearby waters and a large ship in the distance and an imagery of two local women, one gracefully balancing a basket of fruit atop her head, set against a backdrop of lush palm tree fronds.

The Designer, Otto Arpke: Otto Arpke (1886-1943), was a renowned German painter, illustrator, and graphic designer. Born in Braunschweig and influenced by notable German artists like August Schlüter, Emil Orlik, and Paul Scheurich. He served as a professor at the Mainz School of Arts and Crafts (Kunst- und Gewerbeschule) and is celebrated for his graphic works. His portfolio includes posters for the Norddeutscher Lloyd and HAPAG shipping companies, the iconic poster for “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” movie, and various magazine covers. Additionally, Arpke’s artistic flair extended to the interior decoration of the Hindenburg and Graf Zeppelin II airships. However, with the rise of the Nazi regime, Arpke faced accusations of socialist leanings, leading to his removal from his position in Mainz. He was in contact with the Berlin resistance movement, which disseminated anti-Nazi leaflets, and is known to have assisted his Jewish friends in hiding and escaping from Germany.

Jean David was a painter and designer, known for his contributions to the Romanian avant-garde and to the early modernist art of Israel (then recently founded)
He has studied between 1927 and 1937 at various art academies in Paris. In 1929 he participated for the first time at a collective exhibition in Bucharest and in 1933 he had his first personal exhibition (in the same city). In the early ’30s he was a member of the Surrealist group “unu” (meaning “one”). In 1942, he has left Romania in a boat with 12 other Jews, including Theodor Brauner, the brother of Victor Brauner. After being captured by British authorities in Cyprus, he managed to reach Palestrina in 1944. Together with Marcel Janco, he founded in Israel the artist village known as Ein Hod. He also gained much reputation as a muralist and especially designer, having designed numerous posters and other works for the El Al air company.

Jean David was born in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, in a wealthy family.

In 1927 he went to Paris to study architecture, but moved to painting studies at the École de Beauzar in Paris, continuing in the same city at the Scandinavian Academy in Montparnasse and from 1927 to 1933 at the Julian Academy. In 1929 he first took part in a group exhibition in Bucharest, and in 1933 he presented a first solo exhibition. Operate in Dada circle returning from Switzerland. At the time, he painted, among other things, portraits, known as “The Woman with Braided Braids” and actress Lena Keller’s image, influenced by Modilliani. He worked for avant-garde journals, such as Sasha Panna’s “Unu”, whose book “The Imaginary Life of God” illustrated. In 1937, together with Stephane Konstantinosco, he created a fresco for the Romanian Pavilion at the World Exhibition in Paris and in 1939 he painted a mural at the Romanian Pavilion at the World Exhibition in New York.

In 1935, he spent nine months in Haifa on campaign trips in Israel, Egypt and Corfu. In 1942, along with 12 other Jews (including Theodore Browner, my brother Victor Browner) boarded a small illegal immigration ship captured by the British off the coast of Lebanon, and spent two years in a detention camp on Cyprus. In 1944 he was released and enlisted in the British Navy. When the State of Israel was founded, he joined the Israeli Navy.

After the War of Independence, he lived in Jerusalem and made close friendships with Dan Ben Amotz, and illustrated his joint book and Chaim Hefer, “The Schoolbag of Fakes” and Ben Amotz’s book, “How to Do What.” Married to Susie, a stewardess at El Al, author of the Spanish Kitchen cookbook. In 1954, he was one of the founders of the Ein Hod Artists Village.

Participated in the first three exhibitions of the New Horizons group at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the Jerusalem Artists’ House. He also won a solo exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. In 1960 he won the Dizengoff Award for the art of painting and sculpture.

Among his works: a series of Bible Land posters to encourage tourism to Israel, the Independence Day poster and other posters, postage stamps, [1] interior design for the first Boeing 707 aircraft of El Al, Passover Haggadah design [2] and ballot boxes Playing for El Al, [3] decorative walls in ZIM passenger ships, works in hotels and universities in Israel, and creating backdrops for chamber theater and more.

David was the first Israeli designer to be selected as a member of the International Graphics Association (AGI).

Israel, Holiday All Year Around. Vintage Tourism Poster 1954 Jean David
Beautiful poster designed by Jean David calling upon people from around the world to come and visit the young state of Israel. This poster was made by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Tourism. In the early 1950s, Israel launched a major campaign around the world to attract Jews to vacation in Israel and also to persuade them to immigrate to Israel after the vacation.
This poster was printed in honor of this campaign and printed in several languages
This particular poster was hung by a travel agency in the United States.
As you can see the man dressed like a Jewish American with a Hawaiian shirt.
Jan David was the official designer of El Al and the Israeli Ministry of Tourism.
