The poster – “Neytan Beker’s tsurikkumen. A Yiddishe klang-film” (Return of Nathan Becker. Yiddish sound film) in original Yiddish – includes the image of Solomon Mikhoels in a role of Nathan Becker’s father Tsale and two stills from the movie – traditional shtetl street and a group of shtetl Jews enthusiatically signing up for construction jobs in Magnitogorsk. There are also movie credits: script by Perets Markish, Boris Shpis, and Rachel Milman; directed by Boris Shpis and Rachel Milman; camera man Mikhailov; assistant camera man Beervald; music by Brusilovskii; the cast includes S. Mikhoels, D. Gutman, E. Kashnitskaia, Kadar Ben Salim, A Zarzhetskaia. Produced by the Belgoskino studio. In 1932, celebrating the fifteenth anniversary of the Bolshevik revolution, the Leningrad production facility of the Belgoskino studio released the movie “The Return of Nathan Becker,” starring David Gutman, Solomon Mikhoels, and Boris Babochkin. According to the movie’s co-directors Boris Shpis and Rakhel Milman, they “simultaneously produced two different movies [under the same title]—one in Yiddish, another in Russian.” Shpis and Milman also admitted that the movie’s essential dualism created many difficulties, especially for the cast: “Some actors knew no Yiddish, others—no Russian” (“Pervyi v mire evreiskii zvukovoi fil’m” [“The First Yiddish Sound Movie”]. Vecherniaia Moskva (October 30, 1932). The movie is set in the late 1920s. Nathan Becker (played by Gutman), a brick-layer, who emigrated to America 28 years ago, returns to his native shtetl (small Jewish town) where his father Tsale (played by Mikhoels) still lives. Nathan joins the other shtetl Jews getting a job at the construction site of Magnitogorsk, an emblematic metal plant successfully completed during the first Soviet five-year plan (1928-1932). As a skilled worker, Nathan is assigned to train novice builders, however, he struggles to grasp the Socialist labor system and develops the wrong attitude. For example, he sees the socialist competition as his co-workers’ attempt to gain attention and the favor of superiors. To show off his American attitude and superior work method, Nathan challenges others builders to a brick-laying competition. One young worker accepts the challenge, and he and Nathan lay bricks in the circus in front of cheering audiences. Defeated and broken, Nathan believes that he would be fired and sent back to America. His father convinces him that it’s impossible in the Soviet Union where “workers are their own bosses.” To his great surprise, Nathan is promoted and receives encouragement from the local party boss Mikulich (played by Babochkin). The movie ends as Nathan, Tsale, and their Jewish co-workers enthusiatically lay bricks using the best Soviet and American techniques.

The most fanny movie ever made in Israel

Alex Holeh Ahavah (Hebrew: אלכס חולה אהבה‎, Alex Is Lovesick) is a 1986 Israeli cult film directed by Boaz Davidson. It stars Eitan Anshel, Sharon Hacohen, and Uri Kabiri. The film, set in the 1950s, features a boy (Anshel) as the main protagonist and his life as the son of Polish immigrants.

The film is a romantic comedy that takes place in Israel during the austerity period of the 1950s. The main character is Alex, a 12-year-old boy who is about to turn 13 and attend his bar mitzvah.

Alex comes from a poor, dysfunctional family of Polish Jewish origin whose poverty requires them to share their apartment. Their tenant is Faruk, a Persian man whose humorous battle against baldness is a running bit in the film.

At first, Alex falls in love with Mimi, the new girl in his class. Everything changes, however, when his aunt Lola arrives in Israel from Poland to search for a lost love with whom she once lived but who vanished after the Nazi invasion of Poland. Alex falls for his aunt and she responds by providing the soon-to-be 13-year-old with more than familial love.

The film authentically recreates the atmosphere of the country in the 1950s, known as the Austerity in Israel, including the black market, radio broadcasts concentrating on the search for lost relatives, music and pastimes of the 1950s and the era’s clothing and dress styles.

One-of-a-kind poster about the visionary of the Israeli state – Benjamin Ze’ev Herzl.  Extremely rare poster inviting people for the screening of “Theodor Herzl, Flagbearer of the Jewish Nation”.

In 1921, the documentary Yiddish film, “Theodor Herzl, Flagbearer of the Jewish Nation,” was produced, presenting Herzl’s visionary contributions to Jewish history. The film screenings were a monumental occasion for the Jewish communities and inspired many great Zionist leaders. The movie portrays Herzl’s transformative journey from his youth, marked by the specter of anti-Semitic persecution, to his emergence as the architect of modern Zionism.

In the poster (Yiddish):

“The monumental film about Dr. Theodor Herzl
Herzl’s childhood, his student years, the birth of the first Zionist Congress, Herzl’s fights for his ideas, his leadership, and his death.”

A bi-lingual advertisement poster for the film “Theodor Herzl” – a silent movie directed by the Austrian director Otto Kreisler and released in 1921, with Ernst Bath as Herzl and the Jewish actor Rudolph Schildkraut. The protagonist’s name, Sallah Shabati, is perhaps a play on the phrase ‘Sliḥa she’bati, “I apologize for coming”. In earlier print versions of Kishon’s short stories which were revised for the film, the character was known as Saadia Shabtai.

Produced in Israel in English with an international cast, “The Faithful City” depicts some of the courage, patience, bravery, and understanding that attended the birth of Israel as a free and independent nation. The larger story is told within the framework of a simple story regarding the rehabilitation of orphaned children from war-ravaged Europe. Sam, a counselor from a boy’s camp in New York State, is at first confident that children are children no matter what their backgrounds. He soon finds the young refugees to be mature, tough, and living by the creed of ‘survival at any cost.’ One of the children, Max, frustrates Sam with his dishonesty and cockiness.

The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg,” also known as “The Student Prince and Old Heidelberg,” is a 1927 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer silent drama film based on the 1901 play “Old Heidelberg” by Wilhelm Meyer-Förster. It was directed by the German director Ernst Lubitsch, who later became one of Hollywood’s most famous directors.

This magnificent poster design style was very famous in the 1920s. With its remarkable free-hand artistry and elusive typography, this style is certainly missed in today’s graphics.

Chaim Topol in”The Rooster”\ “Boys Will Never Believe It” Vintage Israeli Movie poster, Israel 1971

The Rooster is an Israeli comedy film from 1971 starring Haim Topol and directed by Uri Zohar.

The film describes the difficult life of IDF soldiers in the war of attrition in the south. They are subjected to rocket fire, cut off from their families and just want a vacation. This is also described in the theme song “I Want to live”, sung by Haim Topol, who plays the role of a sergeant in the army, serving in the canal Suez. He goes on a few day’s vacation and is supposed to meet his wife for a divorce ceremony in the rabbinical. In the meantime, he hangs out with random women, and goes through some erotic adventures, all the while thinking that the guys at home won’t believe him, so the movie is called in English except for “The Rooster”, also “Boys Will Never Believe It”.
