Otto Preminger Studio: United Artists. Exodus 1947 was a ship carrying Jewish emigrants, that left France on July 11, 1947 with the intent of taking its passengers to Palestine, then controlled by the British. Most of the emigrants were Holocaust survivor refugees, who had no legal immigration certificates to Palestine. Following wide media coverage, the British Royal Navy seized the ship, and deported all its passengers back to Europe.

Invasion The German army invaded France on 10 May 1940. On 22 June 1940, the French surrendered and signed an armistice with the Nazis. France was then divided in two zones. Northern France was occupied and controlled by Germany. The unoccupied southern zone came under the control of a new French Government led by Marshal Philippe Petain, a World War I hero. Established in the spa town of Vichy, the government and area became known as the Vichy France. General Charles de Gaulle, who opposed Petain’s surrender to the Germans, fled to Great Britain and set up a French Government-in-exile. Many other Frenchmen who wanted to free France from the Germans also supported de Gaulle and fought with the British. Anti-Jewish laws In the summer of 1940, 350,000 Jews were living in France. More than half the Jewish population were not French citizens. Many were Jews who had emmigrated to France from easten Europe after World War I. In addition, many more were Jewish refugees fleeing antisemitism within Nazi Germany and other areas occupied by the Nazis. Almost immediately after the German invasion, Jews living in the occupied zone, and in Vichy France, were subjected to various anti-Jewish measures. In the controlled zone, Jews were dismissed from their jobs and their freedom of movement was restricted. Many Jews were arrested. Collaboration The Vichy Government began to persecute Jews. In October 1940, they passed a set of anti-Jewish laws, defining who was a Jew and limiting their involvement in French society. In March 1941 the Vichy authorities, under pressure from the Germans, set up an Office for Jewish Affairs. Jewish property and businesses were confiscated under Aryanisation laws. Initially, the Vichy Government’s anti-Jewish measures were directed against Jews who were of non-French citizensip. Many thousands were sent to forced labour camps or imprisoned. However, at the end of April 1942, Pierre Laval joined the Vichy Government as prime minister. Laval said Vichy should collaborate fully with the Nazis. From then on the Vichy regime began to persecute all Jews, irrespective of their citizenship. Deportations In June 1942, the Germans forced the Jews in the occupied zone to wear the Star of David. Throughout the summer of 1942, they arrested Jews for deportation, and restricted the movements of the remaining community. These ‘roundups’ were usually carried by French police who collaborated with the Nazis. In one aktion which took place in Paris on 16-17 July 1942, 12,000 were rounded up. Around 7,000 of them were crammed into the Velodrome d’Hiver sports stadium for several days; with no food, water, or sanitation. Many thousands more Jews were sent by cattle car to Drancy transit camp in a suburb of Paris. From there they were deported to the east. The Vichy authorities also arrested and deported Jews from their zone. During the war approximately 80,000 Jews were deported from France. Of these, 70,000 were sent to Auschwitz. The remainder were sent to Majdanek, Sobibor and Buchenwald. By the end of the war just 2,000 of those who were deported had survived.

One-of-a-kind poster about the visionary of the Israeli state – Benjamin Ze’ev Herzl.  Extremely rare poster inviting people for the screening of “Theodor Herzl, Flagbearer of the Jewish Nation”.

In 1921, the documentary Yiddish film, “Theodor Herzl, Flagbearer of the Jewish Nation,” was produced, presenting Herzl’s visionary contributions to Jewish history. The film screenings were a monumental occasion for the Jewish communities and inspired many great Zionist leaders. In the poster (Yiddish):

“The monumental film about Dr. Theodor Herzl
Herzl’s childhood, his student years, the birth of the first Zionist Congress, Herzl’s fights for his ideas, his leadership, and his death.”

Special Blessing Poster in Honor of Israel’s First Independence Day Issued by Keren Hayesod,1949 Designed by the Renowned Shamir Brothers
This is the very first poster that was issued to celebrate Israel’s first Independence Day in 1949. The item is very rare and is a real Masterpiece, Issued by the Keren Hayesod and designed by the very known Shamir Brothers.

Gabriel Shamir (1909-1992) and Maxim Shamir (1910-1990) were Israeli graphic designers. They designed Israel’s official state emblems, medals, stamps, and currency notes.

Between 1930 and 1931 Gabriel worked for the Lintas advertising agency in Berlin and between 1931-1933 for Gumaelius in Stockholm. In 1934, they opened a graphic design studio in Riga, Latvia, but the following year they immigrated to Palestine. The brothers arrived during the Fifth Aliyah. They established the Shamir Brothers Studio on Rothschild Boulevard in Tel Aviv and began to design posters. In 1935, the Shamirs co-founded the Society of Hebrew Graphic Artists in Eretz Israel.

The Coat of Arms of Israel was designed by the Shamir Brothers
Because there were few Hebrew typefaces at the time, the Shamirs improvised hand-painted Hebrew letters, often into transliterated words from European languages and English. Whereas Franz Kraus, the Austrian graphic designer who arrived in Eretz Israel a year before the Shamirs, adhered to a uniform type style, the brothers sought typography that they felt expressed the subject matter.

The Shamir brothers, enthusiastic about the establishment of the Jewish state, undertook to formalize and actualize the visual symbols of Israeli sovereignty and independence. They designed the state’s emblems, medals, stamps, and currency notes, including the 1949 Israeli State Coat of Arms (an image of a menorah and olive branches). In addition, they advertised cigarettes and other consumer goods, as well as designed stamps for countries in Africa, Asia, and South America. Their posters, other advertisements, and logos from 1935 to the close of their studio in 1974—rendered for the lottery, marketing fairs, land settlement, support of the army, food rationing, anti-black-market drives, and other nationalistic efforts—express a hyped Communist attitude, but not extreme or dour as in the propaganda of Bolshevik Russia

Fourth Certificate of Merit – Maccabiah Games 1953

The Maccabiah Games were the brainchild of Yosef Yekutieli, a Zionist immigrant to British Mandate Palestine from Belarus. Inspired by the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Yekutieli lobbied for a similar event in Eretz Yisrael. The nascent Maccabi organization— named for Judah Maccabee, the Jewish warrior whose revolt against Greek oppressors in the second century BCE is commemorated during Hanukkah—held its first competition in Tel Aviv in 1932.

The games’ initial interval was set at three years, but there was no competition between 1935 and 1950 as both Europe and the fledgling Jewish nation were embroiled in the destruction and turmoil surrounding World War II. The 1950 Maccabiah Games were the first in the new State of Israel and united Israel’s athletic community in preparation for the 1952 Olympics, a kind of global coming-out for Jewish athletes.

Over the years, notable American participants in the Maccabiah Games have included swimmers Mark Spitz and Lenny Krayzelburg; gymnasts Kerri Strug and Aly Raisman; and shoe designer and philanthropist Stuart Weitzman, a three-time participant in table tennis. Judit Polgar of Hungary, considered the greatest women’s chess player of all time, and Olympic gymnast Neta Rivkin of Israel, are also alums (chess and bridge are Maccabiah sports).

Regional Maccabi organizations hold competitions in off years, including Latin America’s Pan American Maccabi Games and the European Maccabi Games. This coming January, Germany will host the first Maccabi Winter Games since World War II.

A century after Yekutieli promoted his vision, the Maccabiah Games reflect an increasingly confident and inclusive Jewish sports universe. “There had never been a Shabbat-observant Jew drafted in Major League Baseball until this past year, when there were two,” observed Marshall Einhorn, Maccabi USA’s CEO. “Jews have a proud history in sports that require ruggedness as well as those that require more finesse. The beauty of Maccabiah is that it brings Jewish athletes together across these sports in those two amazing weeks.”

The photographs show all the stages from the conquest of Eilat to the raising   the ink flag

This is an extremely rare photographs, almost none of similar one’s exist. It was taken in 1949 to mark the capture of Eilat by Israel’s military.

The photos is better known as the In flag because of the materials that the stare of david and the stripes were made of. The one who is holding the flag up is Avraham Adan, who would later become Head of Southern Command of Israel.

The known photograph is framed

On 5 March 1949, Israel launched Operation Uvda, the last military maneuver of the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. On 10 March, the Israeli Defense Forces reached the shores of the Red Sea at Umm Rashrash, west of Aqaba in the area of biblical Elath, and captured it without a battle. The Negev Brigade and Golani Brigade took part in the operation. A makeshift flag created from a white sheet inscribed with ink was raised by Captain Avraham Adan, company commander of the 8th Battalion of the Negev Brigade.

The improvised flag was made on the order of Negev Brigade commander Nahum Sarig, when it was discovered that the brigade did not have an Israeli flag on hand. The soldiers found a sheet, drew two ink stripes, and sewed on a Star of David torn off a first-aid kit.

] The photo of the raising of the Ink Flag, taken by the soldier Micha Perry, bears resemblance to the 1945 American photo Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima.

This book is a complete run of 85 Antisemitic issues dealing mostly with the Dreyfus Affair. These newspapers were published in Paris between February 5, 1898 through September 16, 1899. Profusely illustrated with photomechanical prints.

These were published by the most consistent weekly anti-Dreyfus publication. A weekly journal created specifically as a rallying point against the Alfred Dreyfus Affair. Psst! contains no text, only illustrations and captions from the pens of Forain and Caran Ache, principal French caricaturists of their day.

The Dreyfus Affair was an explosive, pivotal moment in the history of France Third Republic. For all of her liberte, egalite, fraternite, France was revealed to be rife with the same unfounded bigotry towards Jews as other less enlightened nations. Opposing camps of Dreyfusards and anti-Dreyfusards settled in as the long political ordeal raged through, not only, French courtrooms, kitchens and marketplaces but the drawing rooms of the outside world as well. This public interest in the Dreyfus conflagration was a 19th century equivalent to the O.J. Trial! Everyone had an opinion. Psst! represented the stiletto sharp but badly misled reiteration of Dreyfus guilt. This magazine unswerving aim was clearly based on preserving the respect and power of the French army and not in establishing who really passed military secrets to the German attache. Widely read during its brief life Psst…! even provoked the creation of another weekly magazine Le Sifflet which sought to maintain Dreyfus innocence. This is propaganda distilled to its purest form, directed at the emotions, without words to complicate the reader’s mental clarity. It was this type of literature and its compelling anti-Semitic position which prompted Theodor Herzl’s call for a Jewish Homeland, as well as Emile Zola famous burst of intellectual outrage.
