El Al / London. 1968.
Reisinger designed the logo for El Al and produced numerous screenprinted posters for the Israeli national airline.

EL AL was born in 1948 along with the State of Israel, not only as an airborne bridge between the fledgling State and the world but as an expression of national existence and pride, as the Israeli flag adorning the aircraft’s tail proudly appeared in destinations around the world.

The history of EL AL is entwined with the history of Israel. EL AL grew along with the State, sharing moments of glory and joy – promoting the country’s growth and expanding its global reach. EL AL and its people were also there during days of sorrow and pain, answering the call of the nation.

EL AL continues to grow in step with the country. Although the airline was privatized economically several years ago, its national spirit and commitment to Israel have never wavered. EL AL continues its many national activities striving for excellence through the service it offers its passengers. EL AL will continue to grow and flourish with the State and to be the first choice of travelers to and from Israel.

The guidelines by which the company operates are productivity, efficiency, punctuality and professionalism, to meet its passenger’s requirements at all times and places.

Through broad global coverage supported by an international chain of 77 sales offices and warm Israeli hospitality, EL AL has become more than a means of transport from one place to another in the world. It has been ranked by IATA as one of the most efficient airlines in the world.

“Saving The Surviving Remnant”,  illustrated poster. Levine-Epstein Ltd. Printing Press, Tel-Aviv, 1945. Design: the Shamir Brothers. Hebrew.

She’arit Hapleta” (The Surviving Remnant) is a term used to describe the holocaust Jewish survivors and refugees.

At the war’s end, approximately 200,000 Jewish survivors of concentration camps, death camps, and death marches remained, with thousands of them succumbing to illness, disease, and the trauma or shock of the liberation. Those who endured searched for loved ones, often in vain, venturing from camps and forests to their pre-war homes, only to face hostility and violence from their neighbors. Around 1,000 survivors fell victim to anti-Semitic and Nazi gangs in the initial post-liberation months.

Fleeing this hostility, most survivors converged in DP camps in Germany, Austria, and Italy, where by late 1946, approximately 250,000 resided. Despite harsh conditions, they fostered vibrant Jewish life, nurturing education, culture, religion, and political engagement.

“Liberated But Not Free” The reality in the DP camp was extremely difficult; the countries beyond the sea restricted immigration, and the gates of Mandatory Israel were locked, due to the refusal of Mandate authorities to implement a new policy to the restrictive 1939 “White Book” even after the Holocaust hours. Between 1945 and 1948, roughly 70,000 survivors made their way to Israel aboard dilapidated ships, only to face British deportation to Cyprus and internment in detention camps. Around 52,000 found themselves once more confined behind wire fences.

On November 29, 1947, the United Nations voted to end the British mandate and establish a Jewish state alongside an Arab state. The next day, battles broke out in Israel. The Holocaust survivors played a central role in the battles as well as in the War of Independence that broke out in May 1948. About half of Israel’s fighting force after the establishment of the IDF were Holocaust survivors, and about a third of all those killed in combat were survivors of the Holocaust horrors.

The Iconic Israeli Air Force Poster “The Best Ones For The Pilot Course”

In 1960, Shabtai Gilboa, a senior IDF pilot, miraculously survived a plane crash during his training and became the face of the Israeli Air Force. Gilboa’s images were selected for the iconic poster that introduced the slogan “The Best Ones For The Pilot Course,” a phrase that redefined the Force’s identity and elevated the pilot’s role to its prestigious status today.

The inception of the slogan “The Best Ones For The Pilot Course” in 1960, attributed to Moshe (Fumi) Hadar, aimed to reshape the perceptions of the pilot’s role and entice prospective recruits. Ezer Weizman, the Force’s commander and future Major General and president, immediately embraced the slogan, reminiscing, “People don’t remember the time when no one wanted to be a pilot, and I had to go from school to school, convincing some of the Air Force’s finest to stay.”

The poster was designed in the studio of the renowned graphic designers, the Shamir brothers, in 1961, in preparation for Israel’s 14th Independence Day, which took place in May 1962. It featured Shabtai Gilboa’s photo in the center, with three of his fellow pilots on the back.

The poster’s message resonated deeply, young people started flocking to serve in the Air Force, inspired by the image of courage and excellence. As the years passed, the slogan proved to be instrumental in shaping the Air Force into what we know it today, and its pilot course to one of the most desired and toughest courses in the IDF and certainly the most famous and admired one.

Abram Avraham Games OBE, RDI (29 July 1914, Whitechapel, London – 27 August 1996, London) Games was one of the preeminent British graphic designers of the 20th Century. Largely self-taught, Games opened his studio in 1936 and, before the war, was already designing posters for major clients such as Shell, The London Transport, and The National Post Office. In 1942, during the war, he was appointed as Britain’s official war poster designer, in which capacity he created more than 100 posters, and became the key person for British war communication. Games was Jewish and a supporter of the State of Israel for which he designed a few travel posters. This same image was used on a Hebrew language exhibition poster in 1953. Very Rare, we could not locate another at auction in over 20 years.

The style of his work  (refined but vigorous compared to the work of contemporaries ) has earned him a place in the pantheon of the best of 20th-century graphic designers. In acknowledging his power as a propagandist, he claimed, “I wind the spring, and the public, in looking at the poster, will have that spring released in its mind.” Because of the length of his career – over six decades – his work is essentially a record of the era’s social history. Some of Britain’s most iconic images include those by Games. An example is the “Join the ATS” poster of 1941, nicknamed the “blonde bombshell” recruitment poster. His work is recognized for its “striking color, bold graphic ideas, and beautifully integrated typography”

The Black Panthers (Hebrew: הפנתרים השחורים, translit. HaPanterim HaShhorim) were an Israeli protest movement of second-generation Jewish immigrants from North Africa and Middle Eastern countries. It was one of the first organizations in Israel with the mission of working for social justice for Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews, drawing inspiration and borrowing the name from the African-American organization Black Panther Party. It is also sometimes referred to as the Israeli Black Panthers to distinguish them from the original American group.

Original poster from 1973 of Srulik, the cartoon character symbolizing Israel,
Poster for the 25th Idependence Day of Israel. The poster shows Srulik chasing a Eagle (dove) of peace with an olive branch in its mouth, using a butterfly net. Illustrated by Dosh (Kariel Gardosh). Printed in Israel, 1973. Approximately 48X68 cm

The character was created in 1956 by the Israeli cartoonist Kariel Gardosh, known by his pen name Dosh. The cartoon appeared for many years in newspaper Maariv. Yosef Lapid, Dosh’s colleague on the editorial board of Maariv, described Srulik as an icon of Israel.

Srulik is generally depicted as a young man wearing a tembel hat, Biblical sandals, and khaki shorts. Srulik is a pioneering Zionist, a lover of the land of Israel and its soil, a dedicated farmer who in time of need puts on a uniform and goes out to defend the state of Israel. Dosh drew Srulik in cartoons on current events for Maariv, and also for various “specials” and occasions of the young state. During wartime, Srulik put on a uniform and was drafted to raise the national morale.

“Fifth ‘Hapoel’ Convention”, illustrated poster. Lito. Press “Dafna”, 1952. Design: Richard Blass.
Illustrated poster for the fifth convention of “Hapoel” in Pesach (April) 1952.
The illustration depicts a parade of sportsmen. On the right – two flags – a red flag with the emblem of “Hapoel” and the flag of Israel.

The Hapoel convention was a national and international sports event that was held once every four years under the auspices of the President of the State of Israel. The public council of the convention was headed by the general secretary of the General Workers’ Union. The first convention was held in 1928, and the 15th and last convention was held in 1995.

In the beginning, there was a national gathering of all members of Hapoel, athletes in a variety of fields, who held meetings and competitions that lasted several days. As the number of “Hapoel” members increased, so did the nature of the event. At the center of the convention – international and national events.

Shtrauss Health Center History-

On the eastern side of Shtrauss Street in Jerusalem, is the building that gave the street its name, the Shtrauss Health Center.

The building, designed by the architect Benjamin Chaikin, was inaugurated in 1929 by the Hadassah Zionist Organization at the initiative of Henrietta Sold and with the contribution of Natan Strauss in order to serve as a building for clinics, dental clinics, a center for medical consultation and training, hygiene and nutrition.

Its full name, engraved above its entrance, is “The Natan and Lina Strauss Health Center for Children of All Races and Religions.” Before the establishment of the health center, a large steam-powered flour mill was located on this lot, established by Shlomo HaCohen Milner. The mill caught fire shortly before the health center was built on the site.

Today (2012) the building belongs to Hadassah Hospital and is used for outpatient clinics and offices.

The song on the poster-
Every vegetable, every fruit, even if it looks fresh, has thousands of germs hidden in it, do not eat it before soaking it for half an hour in a disinfecting solution of potassium permanganate 1:1000
