“Bring back my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 43:6)

Founded in November 1948 as Israel’s national airline, EL AL has been an indispensable bridge connecting Israel to the world. In times of challenge, EL AL’s role remains unparalleled.

Between 1951 and 1957, EL AL worked tirelessly to establish itself amid economic struggles and significant challenges in travel and trade. Serious doubts arose about whether Israel, a small nation, could sustain an international airline without draining its resources.

Initially, EL AL’s routes connected Tel Aviv with major European cities. However, in 1950, after acquiring two additional aircraft, EL AL launched new flights to New York and Johannesburg. This expansion made EL AL the first airline outside North America and Europe to operate scheduled trans-Atlantic service, a groundbreaking achievement celebrated throughout Israel.

This week’s featured poster captures the spirit of that era, symbolizing EL AL’s pioneering efforts and the hopes of a young nation.
