Collection of Rare 20th-Century Israeli Enamel Street Signs in Hebrew

We’re thrilled to share the gallery’s collection of Rare 20th-Century Israeli Enamel Street Signs in Hebrew. These signs, seen on the streets of Israel during the late 1940s and 1950s, represent a common Hebrew Jewish voice and a shared sense of belonging, reconnecting our land to our ancient language.

Among the streets featured in this collection are those honoring key Zionist leaders like Binyamin Ze’ev Herzl and Ze’ev Jabotinsky. You’ll also find names commemorating historic milestones, such as “HaShichrur Blvd.” (Liberation Blvd) and “Paratroops Blvd,” in tribute to the Israeli War of Independence. Additionally, Jewish tradition and heritage street names like “Tribes of Israel Street”.

Crafted from iron and enamel and inscribed in both Hebrew and English indicating that they were created during the British mandate. These signs were eventually replaced by more cost-effective aluminum versions, making these originals rare, cherished artifacts of early Israeli life and Hebrew’s rebirth.

The Hebrew language creates a continuous thread of the heritage. Each Hebrew item reminds us of the journey and resilience that led to the revival of a Jewish state and Hebrew as a vibrant, living language.
