“Don’t Waste Water” Rare Vintage Israeli Poster for Water Conservation, 1960s
Design: Jean David
100 × 70 cm
Printed by the Government Information Center and the Water Commission, in cooperation with the Municipality of Jerusalem
In this bold and playful 1960s poster, the Lion of Jerusalem—Israel’s civic symbol—is depicted taking direct action to prevent water waste. With its assertive slogan “Don’t Waste Water” (Al Tevazbez Mayim), the poster was part of a larger national campaign to promote water conservation during a period of frequent droughts.
Designed by Jan David, the poster exemplifies the visual language of Israeli public awareness efforts in the early statehood years: colorful, symbolic, and urgent.
In the 1960s, Israel’s government and public information offices launched nationwide campaigns promoting water conservation in response to recurring droughts and the country’s reliance on limited natural resources.
These campaigns laid the groundwork for a cultural shift: saving water wasn’t just for times of crisis—it became a daily habit. Posters and slogans filled the streets, schools, and newspapers with powerful messages like “Israel is drying up.”
Alongside technological breakthroughs such as drip irrigation and desalination, these early efforts helped shape Israel’s unique relationship with water and its global leadership in water innovation.
