Unit 101 and The Retaliatory actions against terrorism

The terror against Israel never stopped-

From 1951 to 1955, during a period marked by escalating hostilities and the tragic loss of around a thousand Israeli civilian lives, the Israel Defense Forces formed a specialized commando unit, Unit 101, aimed at countering the violence caused by Arab infiltrators. Until to this day, Unit 101 remains a symbol of the strength and core values of the IDF.

Following the War of Independence, the “green line” border emerged as a lasting result of failed peace negotiations. Initially non-violent, Arab infiltration evolved into a terror threat, driven by the encouragement of neighboring Arab nations. This led to theft, acts of sabotage, and, tragically, the brutal killings of Israeli soldiers and civilians in 1953.

Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and the General Staff grappled with the imperative to protect Jewish lives and curb Arab infiltrations. Unit 101 was established in August 1953 under the leadership of commander Ariel Sharon. Comprising 50 young men chosen for their integrity, humility, physical prowess, bravery, patriotism, and willingness to make sacrifices,

Just five months after its formation, Unit 101 was disbanded and integrated into the 890 Paratrooper Battalion at the Tel Nof base in January 1954. Despite its short tenure, the unit left an indelible mark on the IDF, redefining the IDF combat standards and instilling values of commitment, camaraderie, courage, and flawless execution of tasks.

Ten days ago, on the seventh of October, Israel faced its gravest terrorist attack in the nation’s history. Over a thousand terrorists infiltrated from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory, they slaughtered, destroyed, squandered and kidnapped Israeli citizens and soldiers. In these challenging times, we stand resolute in solidarity with the Israel Defense Forces. The IDF, carrying the legacy of Unit 101’s dedication and unwavering values, remains committed to safeguarding the citizens of Israel. The courage and determination displayed throughout history by units like Unit 101 continue to inspire faith in the IDF’s ability to protect and defend.
