Vintage Israeli Election Posters – 1996 Benjamin Netanyahu First Victory Campaign
Two original Israeli election posters from the historic 1996 campaign in which Benjamin Netanyahu won his first term as Prime Minister of Israel. The posters were produced for the campaign of the political alliance Likud – Gesher – Tzomet and represent the visual language of Israeli street election campaigns of the 1990s. The 1996 election was historically significant because it was the first time Israelis voted directly for a Prime Minister. In that election Netanyahu faced the incumbent Prime Minister Shimon Peres and won by a narrow margin, becoming the youngest Prime Minister in Israel’s history. The campaign emphasized security and stability during the years following the Oslo Peace Process, expressed in the central slogan appearing on one of the posters: “נתניהו: עושים שלום בטוח” (Netanyahu: Making a Secure Peace). The poster features a large portrait of Netanyahu against the Israeli flag, creating a strong national visual identity typical of political posters of the period. The second poster focuses on the voting slip itself and reads “בנימין נתניהו” above the ballot letters “מחל”, the official voting slip for the Likud–Gesher–Tzomet list. Its graphic design shows stylized ballot papers placed on a blue lined background, visually reminding voters which ballot to choose in the polling station. Together the two posters illustrate both the personal leadership campaign of Netanyahu and the party ballot used in the election.
