 A rare and historical collectible – an original public information poster from the 1950s. Designed by “Mark,” this poster was produced as part of a joint national effort by the Israeli Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Culture to promote personal hygiene and public health during the early days of the State of Israel.

The poster stands out with its sharp, clean graphic design, featuring a bold red background and vibrant yellow banners. In the center are two illustrations demonstrating proper hygiene practices: washing hands under a running tap, and washing fruits and vegetables (grapes, an apple, a pear, and a cucumber).

The Hebrew text on the poster reads:

• Top: “Cleanliness is your vaccination” (הניקיון הוא זריקת החיסון שלך)

• Bottom: “Water and soap – your best friends” (המים והסבון – ידידיך הטובים)

Historical Background This poster serves as a fascinating visual testament to the formative period of the 1950s in Israel. During these years, the young state faced the immense challenge of absorbing mass immigration. Many new arrivals were housed in transit camps (Ma’abarot), where sanitation conditions were often difficult. At the time, the country experienced outbreaks of severe infectious diseases, most notably the polio epidemic.

In response, the Ministry of Health launched unprecedented and extensive public information campaigns to instill basic hygiene habits within the population. The use of the metaphor “your vaccination” was highly intentional—it was designed to emphasize the critical importance of prevention and cleanliness at a time when actual vaccination campaigns were at the forefront of public attention and anxiety.
