“The IDF Reaches Out to the Children of the Ma’abarot” – Independence Day Poster Designed by Gershon Knispel
An extremely rare historical item printed by the IDF immediately following the War of Independence. In the early years of the State of Israel, facing massive waves of immigration and the establishment of transit camps (Ma’abarot), the army joined the national effort to absorb new immigrants. This poster was designed to encourage IDF soldiers to assist, support, and accompany immigrant children living in these camps, serving as historical evidence of the military’s deep social and civic involvement during those formative years.
The poster, created by artist Gershon Knispel and published by the Information Branch of the IDF General Staff/Manpower Directorate, features an illustration of a uniformed soldier extending a warm hand to a girl, alongside a young boy and a dog. The left side includes a rubric titled “Program,” intended for filling in the schedule of Independence Day events.
