“The 5th of iyar- Yom Ha’atzmaut (Independence Day)” – published by Keren Kayemet L’Israel (the Jewish National Fund), Jerusalem
printed by the Education Department of the Jewish National Fund, which were displayed in Jewish schools around the world. They were published as series, each set bound in a folder containing 12 different posters, with each series dedicated to a different Zionist theme.
This poster is part of the Independence Day series.
The posters served as an effective educational and informational tool for the Jewish National Fund (JNF), with many of them intended for use in the educational system of the Yishuv (the pre-state Jewish community in Palestine). Almost every classroom had such a poster. They proved to be a powerful means of education and soon reached youth movements and Zionist organizations abroad as well.
The messages conveyed by the posters were simple and concise—but that did not mean they lacked sophistication; on the contrary, that was their very essence.
For example, a poster depicting a water tower does not actually refer to the water tower itself, but rather to one of the key symbols of Zionism, representing settlement.
