WIZO (Women’s International Zionist Organization) is one of the most important Zionist women’s movements in modern Jewish history. It was founded in London in 1920, shortly after World War I, at a time when the Jewish national project in Palestine was beginning to take shape under the British Mandate. From its earliest days, WIZO focused on practical action: strengthening Jewish society through education, welfare, healthcare, and professional training, with a special emphasis on supporting women, children, and families. In the 1920s and 1930s, WIZO helped establish and operate nurseries, kindergartens, maternal health services, and vocational programs, creating a social infrastructure that played a major role in building the foundations of the future State of Israel. After 1948, WIZO continued its mission in Israel by supporting children and youth at risk, assisting women in crisis, promoting women’s empowerment, and expanding educational and welfare services throughout the country. At the same time, WIZO grew into a worldwide network with branches across many countries, especially in the United Kingdom, North America, Australia, and South Africa, raising funds and support for its work in Israel. Over more than a century, WIZO has remained a symbol of women-led Zionist commitment, combining social responsibility with nation-building and long-term impact.
