“SuperJew” Vintage Poster: Six-Day War Victory, 1960s- A Symbol of the Zionist Dream and The Jewish “Transformation” – Redemption Amid Hatred and Antisemitism
In the summer of 1967, Israel miraculously defeated the armies of Egypt, Syria, and Jordan and won a decisive victory in the Six-Day War. During that historic moment, the “SuperJew” poster became highly popular.
The “SuperJew” was a visual representation of the Zionist mission and the Jewish “transformation”: creating a safe haven where Jews could stand tall, no longer bound by the shadows of the Holocaust, and defend themselves against hatred and violence.
It depicts a Hasidic man stepping out of a phone booth, mirroring Superman’s iconic transformation, with a costume bearing the Hebrew letter “Shin” instead of Superman’s famous “S.”
Superman himself was born from the imagination of two Jewish creators, Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel, who introduced the character in 1938—just months before the horrors of Kristallnacht. Superman embodied the Jewish yearning for strength and redemption in the face of the Nazi threat.
After the Holocaust, the Jewish people vowed never again to be defenseless. Today, in the wake of October 7 and recent events in Europe, we renew that vow: we will not stand idle in the face of antisemitism or bloodshed.
