Description

On August 29, 1897, the first Zionist Congress convened in Basel, at Herzl’s initiative. The official platform of the Zionist movement was accepted at the Congress, which stated: “Zionism aspires to establish a homeland guaranteed by common law for the people of Israel in the Land of Israel.” Following the congress, Herzl wrote in his diary “In Basel, I founded the Jewish state, if I said it out loud today, they would laugh at me, maybe in five years, certainly in 50 years, they will recognize it all.” 50 years later, on November 29, 1947, the United Nations decided on the establishment of the Jewish state, the State of Israel. The Independence Day coin was dedicated to a vision that came true, to an extraordinary event that changed the course of the history of the Jewish people and the entire world.
