Poster History-
Back in the late 30s in the years before the establishment of the state, long before the Ministry of Health determined that smoking was harmful to health and that this should be noted on every pack, Dobek company released an unusual sticker collecting album – each pack of Dobek Cigarettes contains a sticker photo, hundreds of photos of the ‘defenders’ of the homeland and athletes from Eretz Israel.
Surprisingly, the endeavor to collect and release the album was not initiated by any Jewish agencies like Keren Hayesod or KKL-JNF. Dobek, the old blue-and-white cigarette company, solely perceived the significance of these photos and spearheaded the initiative.

From Photo to Poster by Franz Kraus
During the making of this remarkable album, Dobek enlisted the expertise of the famous graphic designer, Franz Kraus, known for his talent in creating posters characterized by their realistic imagery derived from photographs. His posters were distinguished by their sharp contrast between light and shadow, vibrant colors, and dynamic compositions. In light of the upcoming Near East festival, Dobek approached Kraus and entrusted him with the task of designing two posters based on photos from the album. The resulting posters stand as enduring testaments to Kraus’s exceptional skill, admired even to this day as some of his most captivating and powerful works.
