Original Painting – “Herzl on the Shores of the Homeland” | Menashe Kadishman
(Acrylic on Canvas, 80 × 60 cm, Framed)
An extraordinary and exceptionally rare original masterpiece by Israel Prize laureate and national artist Menashe Kadishman (1932–2015). Diverging from his signature sheep portraits, Kadishman depicts the visionary of the Jewish State, Theodor Herzl, overlooking the vibrant Mediterranean Sea and the flourishing shores of Israel—where the Zionist dream has become a living reality. A museum-caliber, highly prestigious, and sought-after historical collector’s item.
In the iconic historic photograph from 1901, Theodor Herzl stood on the balcony of a hotel in Basel looking out over the Rhine, when a sovereign Jewish state was still a distant aspiration. In this captivating and original work, Kadishman takes Herzl on a journey through time into the realization of his great dream:
The Mediterranean Coastline: Herzl leans against the railing, gazing out across dynamic, deep-blue waters with white-crested waves, set against the rolling hills of the Land of Israel painted in warm, vibrant hues of yellow, green, red, and purple.
The Seven Stars of Zionism: Arched gracefully above Herzl’s head is a constellation of seven deep-blue Stars of David. This is a brilliant homage to Herzl’s “Seven Stars Flag” from The Jewish State, transformed here into seven Stars of David representing Jewish sovereignty, national rebirth, and pride.
While Menashe Kadishman is world-renowned for his sheep motif, original paintings portraying prominent historical leaders—particularly Theodor Herzl—are exceedingly rare within his body of work. This piece transcends decorative art; it is a cultural and historical asset of profound national value, making it an exceptional acquisition for premier art collectors and institutions worldwide.
Recipient of the Israel Prize for Sculpture (1995) and an internationally acclaimed pillar of Israeli art. His work was featured at the 1978 Venice Biennale and is preserved in leading museums worldwide, including the MoMA in New York. Among his landmark public installations are “Uprise” (the three monumental weathered-steel disks at Habima Square in Tel Aviv) and the internationally renowned installation “Shalechet” (Fallen Leaves) at the Jewish Museum Berlin.
