Description

Moshe Raviv-Vorovchik —  Moi Ver “Twenty Years of Building” (c. 1940s)
Lithographic poster | approx. 50 × 70 cm (≈ 19.7 × 27.6 inches)

About the artist

Moi Ver (Moshe Raviv-Vorobeichic, 1904–1995) was a modernist Israeli painter, photographer and graphic designer born in Belarus and raised in Vilna, where he studied art, photography and architecture before enrolling in the Bauhaus school in Dessau in 1927 under artists such as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Josef Albers, an education that shaped his avant-garde visual language; he later moved to Paris and in 1931 published the experimental photomontage book “Paris” with an introduction by Fernand Léger, in 1932 he arrived in Palestine as a press photographer and in 1934 immigrated permanently to Tel Aviv, after the War of Independence he became one of the founders of the artists’ colony in Safed where he lived until his death, his work combined experimental modernist photography, photomontage, painting and graphic design and included documentary projects such as the photographic series on Jewish Vilna presented at the Zionist Congress in Zurich, and his works were later exhibited in major museums including the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, representing a generation of Jewish avant-garde artists who bridged European modernism and the emerging visual culture of the new Hebrew society.

THE POSTER Printed during the years of the Holocaust in Europe, the poster embodies a striking historical contrast: while Jewish cultural life across the continent was being destroyed, creative production continued in the Yishuv. Raviv-Vorovchik survived thanks to his immigration to the Land of Israel, unlike many artists of his generation.

The poster – subject and meaning

General Federation of Hebrew Workers in the Land of Israel Association of Engineers, Architects and Surveyors Exhibition Twenty Years of Building Workers’ Settlements Housing and Public Institutions Vorovchik at the New Arlosoroff House Tel Aviv 17.11.1940 – 28.11.1940 Exhibition of Twenty Years of Building Workers’ Settlements Housing and Public Institutions at the Tel Aviv Arlosoroff House (Beilinson Street near Dizengoff Circle) Open 9 a.m. – 10 p.m.

This poster announces an exhibition marking twenty years of construction in the Yishuv — workers’ settlements, housing and public institutions.
It is not merely an advertisement; it is ideological imagery — a visual manifesto of nation-building.

At the center stands the Hebrew pioneer worker:
a simplified, monumental figure carrying a long structural beam across cultivated land. Behind him rise agricultural fields, cooperative settlements and modern buildings — a symbolic transition from land to organized society.

The image expresses:

  • manual labor as a national value

  • collective construction of society

  • transformation of landscape into homeland

  • the worker as cultural hero

Bauhaus / Modernist style

The design follows Bauhaus-influenced modernist language:

  • geometric simplification of the human figure

  • flat color planes (red soil, blue sky, cream beam)

  • strong silhouettes and minimal shading

  • dynamic diagonal composition conveying movement and progress

  • typography integrated into the architectural structure of the image

The worker becomes almost part of the architecture — merging man and building.

Visual appearance & condition

Printed in stone lithography, the colors remain rich and matte, typical of period printing.
The poster shows light age wear yet remains in good condition, with clear contours and vivid contrast between the warm earth tones and cool sky.

Significance

More than an exhibition announcement, it represents a worldview:
nationhood created through labor and construction.
