Offered here is a rare and authentic historical document – an official letter by Theodor Herzl (1860–1904), founder of political Zionism, typed in German and signed in his own hand. The letter is written on official stationery of the Bureau des Zionisten-Congresses in Vienna, which served as the central administrative body of the early Zionist movement. This is a TLS (Typed Letter Signed), one page, measuring 8.75 × 10 inches (approx. 22.2 × 25.4 cm), providing an authentic glimpse into Herzl’s day-to-day leadership activities. Addressed to the “Jüdischer Buch- und Kunstverlag” in Brünn, the letter contains a personal request to meet “Mr. Hickl” prior to his departure for Germany, reflecting the network of personal and professional relationships that underpinned the Zionist enterprise.
The letterhead itself is rich in official and symbolic detail: at the top appears the bilingual title “EREZ ISRAEL” alongside the Hebrew “ארץ ישראל,” followed by “BUREAU DES ZIONISTEN-CONGRESSES.” At the center is a decorative graphic incorporating a Star of David, reinforcing the Zionist identity of the document. On the left side are the office contact details – “Telefon Nr. 14.109” and “Telegramm-Adresse: Herzlorgan, Wien,” illustrating the modern communication infrastructure of the movement. Beneath appears the slogan “Gedenket des Nationalfonds!” (“Remember the National Fund!”), a clear call to support early Zionist land acquisition efforts. On the right side are the place and date, “Wien, am 10. April 1902,” along with the official office address “IX., Türkenstrasse Nr. 9,” situating the bureau in the heart of Vienna.
The letter dates to 1902 – a particularly significant year in which Herzl published his utopian novel Altneuland, placing this document at the intersection of his organizational leadership and intellectual vision. Additionally, affixed to the letter is an early Zionist label featuring a Star of David and the Hebrew word “Zion,” associated with the early activities of the Jewish National Fund, providing tangible evidence of fundraising and advocacy efforts at the dawn of the Zionist movement.
The document is in very good to fine condition, with light handling wear and scattered small stains consistent with its age and use. This is a rare, museum-quality collectible of considerable historical, cultural, and investment value, representing a unique opportunity for serious collectors of Judaica, autographs, and early Zionist history
