A Brief History of EL AL Israel Airlines

Founded in 1948, shortly after the establishment of the State of Israel, EL AL quickly became more than just an airline – it grew into a national symbol. Its first scheduled flight was launched in 1949, connecting Tel Aviv with Paris, and soon after with London and New York.

During the 1950s and 1960s, EL AL expanded rapidly, introducing modern jet aircraft and promoting Israel worldwide as both an ancient and modern travel destination. The company produced striking vintage posters, many of which are now collectible works of art that capture the optimism of Israel’s early years.

Over the decades, EL AL played a vital role in historic missions, from bringing Jewish communities to Israel in large immigration operations, to taking part in dramatic rescue efforts. At the same time, it became known for having one of the strictest aviation security systems in the world.

Today, EL AL continues to fly passengers across the globe, carrying with it a unique blend of aviation history, national pride, and cultural identity.
